Program Features

Facilities
Huntington University opened a newly-constructed, 90,000 square-foot Science Hall for the Division of Natural and Mathematical Sciences in 2002. The new learning center features a quality learning environment with student-friendly spaces, teaching and research specialty equipment, well-designed laboratories and research spaces, and multimedia classrooms in rich, art-infused aesthetic surroundings.

Instrumentation
The Huntington University Chemistry Department’s collection of instrumentation was increased when the new Science Hall was built in 2002.  Our instruments have been carefully chosen to be student-operable and to represent a range of analyses encountered in both industry and research.  Chemistry majors at Huntington have the advantage of being mentored in the operation and maintenance of these instruments.  Instrumentation includes a 200 MHz nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometer, a gas chromatograph – mass spectrometer (GC-MS), two Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometers (FTIRs),  three UV-Visible spectrophotometers, two fluorimeters, a gas chromatograph (GC), an atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AA), a polarograph, a high performance liquid chromatograph (HPLC), oxygen combustion and solution calorimeters, Vernier LabPro interfaces, a HACH Portable Laboratory, and Wavefunction SpartanPro molecular modeling software.

Students and faculty also make use of Mathematica, a powerful computation and modeling tool.

Off-campus opportunities
Undergraduate research, internships, and job experience is encouraged and available through a variety of off-campus learning opportunities. These include summer research internships, January Term courses, and attending professional meetings and seminars.

Coursework

Undergraduate chemistry majors may take foundational coursework in all five branches of chemistry at Huntington University.

Minors

Students majoring in chemistry who are interested in industrial or research careers may choose to minor in a related area such as biology, environmental science, mathematics, or physics.
