Conceptual Framework:
"Teacher as Effective Steward"
At Huntington University, we see teachers acting as effective stewards
of knowledge, of learner development, of learning environments, and of
instruction. Follow the links to learn more:
Program Curriculum
Students interested in a career in teaching must be admitted to the teacher
education program. Students are considered for admission on the basis of
their classroom achievement, scores on an admissions test, the results of a
personal interview, and other indicators of potential success in the field
of teaching.
In addition to student teaching,
students in both the elementary and secondary programs complete a teaching
practicum. This three-week, full-day experience takes place in multicultural
settings in Fort Wayne. The elementary education program includes an
eight-week field experience during the junior year.
Elementary education majors also
take an integrated curriculum course during the senior year which teaches
strategies for integrating computers and thematic units into the general
curriculum. Students interested in certification at the secondary or
all-grade levels should refer to the department offering programs in the
desired subject areas.
Kappa Delta Pi
Kappa Delta Pi, International Honor Society in Education, has over 600
chapters and 60,000 members worldwide. The Omega Psi chapter was chartered
at Huntington University in 2000 and in 2003 received an Achieving Chapter
Excellence (ACE) award at the Biennial Convocation in St. Louis, Missouri.
ACE awards are given only to those chapters which have demonstrated superior
performance in all the society's ideals. Huntington's Omega Psi is the
youngest chapter ever to receive an ACE award.
Second semester sophomores,
juniors, and seniors whose cumulative GPA is in the top 20% of the major are
eligible for induction into Kappa Delta Pi if they have "exhibited the
ideals of scholarship, high personal standards, and promise in teaching and
allied professions."
Membership is also open to
education faculty and school personnel who exhibit high academic
achievement, a commitment to education as a career, and an attitude that
assures continued growth in the teaching profession.
