admission requirements
The Master of
Education program is designed primarily for classroom teachers who have
demonstrated themselves to be competent, effective teachers as indicated by the
criteria for admission below.
If you would like to
begin taking courses, simply fill out the one-page graduate application and registration form and
submit it with the $30 application fee to the Huntington University registrar
(check should be made out to Huntington University). The Program is designed so
that qualified candidates may enroll for any classes being offered, except the
Field Based Research Project, prior to formal application for admission to the
M.Ed. program.
Renew your license or earn a high-quality master’s degree for much less than
you'd pay at some other universities. The tuition for the Master of Education
Program is comparable to or lower than other graduate programs in the area.
Those wishing to make formal application to the M.Ed. degree program should
note the admission criteria below and consult with Brenda Knipp about the
necessary verifications. (bknipp@huntington.edu or 260-359-4141)
Admission
criteria for candidates (except TESOL track)
- Degree in education from a regionally accredited college or
university
- Teaching experience
- Current teaching license or proof of licensable status
- Recommendation from a teaching colleague
- Recommendation from a school, district, or corporation
administrator
- Undergraduate gpa of 3.0
Candidates for the TESOL track in the Master of Education program must meet the following admission criteria.
Admission
criteria for TESOL track
- Cross cultural or multilingual experience
- Recommendation from the Institute for TESOL Studies
- Recommendation from a colleague or supervisor with knowledge of
the candidate’s cross cultural or multilingual experience
- Completed bachelor’s degree with an undergraduate gpa of 3.0
Since
most candidates in the M.Ed. program are already licensed teachers, the M.Ed.
program does not prepare students for an initial teaching license. Therefore, non-licensed students in the TESOL
track will not be qualified at the completion of the program to seek teacher
licensing in Indiana. Those who do have
Indiana teaching licenses will be able to add EL certification to their
licenses after the successful completion of the M.Ed. with the TESOL
track.
Diversity experience
Appreciating
and preparing for classroom diversity is a core component of the conceptual
model for the Master of Education program. Teachers lacking experience in working with diverse populations may be required to complete a field experience in a culturally or ethnically diverse classroom.
To
facilitate this field experience for current classroom teachers, arrangements
may be made with the director of field experiences for a summer school
assignment in selected Fort Wayne schools. These field experiences are
reinforced by the intentional inclusion of diversity issues in courses such as
the Current Issues series (ED 611, 621, 631, and 641) and ED 525 Differentiated
Instruction.
