Special Features of our Program

  • Many local principals express very positive opinions about Huntington University’s education programs, pre-service teachers, and graduates.

  • The department is accredited by the State of Indiana and accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).

  • The education program is among the largest academic departments at Huntington University.

  • All the education professors have K-12 teaching experience and graduate school study.  Five department faculty members have earned doctorates in their area of specialization.  Most have over 15 years experience teaching college and supervising student teachers.

  • Students get into classrooms every semester of their program, ensuring wide exposure to different grade levels and teaching and learning styles.

  • The program has a junior block in which we schedule elementary methods courses, finishing exams a month early and providing an every-day, all-morning field experience for four weeks each semester.

  • The junior block creates a camaraderie and sense of belonging and togetherness with each cohort of teacher candidates.

  • The department is equipped with two model classrooms.

  • Many education majors gain practical experiences while working at Kids’ Kampus, a child-care facility located near the campus.

  • Many education majors tutor other college students in the Learning Center, volunteer with the Joe Mertz Center, or participate in Spring Break mission trips.

  • We have a required multicultural practicum during the college’s January term.  All education majors spend full days in urban classrooms.
