Nurturing and Reflective Teachers:

A Christian Approach for the 21st Century

3.1.4 Chapter 4: Peace keeper vs. Peacemaker - A Conception of Classroom Ethos for Christian Teachers

a] What are some similarities and differences between the notions of peace-keeper and peace-maker?

b]     How, as teachers, do we assume our schools and classrooms to be places of peace? Upon what do we base this assumption?

c] What are some of the ways in which schools and teachers create fear, in terms of both structure and practice? Can you identify elements of your own classroom practice that may unintentionally create fear in your students? In what ways could you address such a situation in order to ‘make peace’?

d] Parker Palmer’s work on ‘learning communities’ provides a thoughtful source from which to reconsider the ways in which classrooms function and the ideals upon which behavior should be based. Drawing upon the ideas contained in this chapter, devise a ‘Charter of Ideals’ for your classroom that will create peace and enrich your students’ learning.
