Nurturing and Reflective Teachers:

A Christian Approach for the 21st Century

3.3.16 Chapter 16: Electronic Portfolio Assessment and Reflective Christian Practice

a] What have been some effects of technology upon your own work as a teacher and as a student? Have these effects been positive or negative?

b] Schwartz makes an interesting comment that "one of the persistent problems related to technology is that the promise of lifting heavy burdens is seldom realized by technology. Our culture sings a siren song telling us that technology will make our work easier, but in reality, technology adds to our burdens." What is your response to this statement? Can you identify examples from society in general, and from your own work context, where improvements in technology have increased, rather than alleviated, burdens? What about those who do not have access?

c] Do you agree with Landers’ and Monsma’s claims regarding values in technology? Do these views apply equally to both hardware and software? What evidence could you offer to support or refute their views?

d] What is the role of ‘human nature’ in this debate? What examples of the "tension between the fall and redemption" can be identified in terms of past technological developments?

e] Choose an example of the use of technology in your area. Apply the Delta Principle to this example, using the two-by-two table to analyze the effects of the technology at Delta Level III. How does this exercise allow you to understand the example in the light of the ‘creation-fall-redemption’ paradigm?

f] If ‘technology adds to our burdens’, suggest some principles for deciding the relationships between cyber and human space.
