Education Department

The Education Department offers programs for students who desire to become teachers at the elementary or secondary level. Teacher education programs include a planned series of courses, a series of field experiences, and student teaching during the senior year.

  • Elementary education majors are eligible for State of Indiana teaching licenses in early childhood and middle childhood.
  • A special education minor prepares teaching candidates to provide mild intervention in grades K-6. (more details...)
  • Secondary education majors will be licensed to teach middle school and high school art, biology, business, chemistry, English, mathematics, or social studies.
  • All-grade majors will be licensed to teach K-12 art, music, or physical education/health.

The Education Department is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE)Teacher education programs leading to licensure are approved by the Indiana Professional Standards Board. Many surrounding states have cooperative agreements with Indiana that allow individuals with Indiana licenses to teach in those states.

Special Features of our Program

  • Many local principals express very positive opinions about Huntington University’s education programs, pre-service teachers, and graduates.
  • The department is NCATE accredited.
  • The education program is among the largest academic departments at Huntington University.
  • All the education professors have K-12 teaching experience and graduate school study.  Five department faculty members have earned doctorates in their area of specialization.  Most have over 15 years experience teaching college and supervising student teachers.
  • Students get into classrooms every semester of their program, ensuring wide exposure to different grade levels and teaching and learning styles.
  • The program has a junior block in which we schedule elementary methods courses, finishing exams a month early and providing an every-day, all-morning field experience for four weeks each semester.
  • The junior block creates a camaraderie and sense of belonging and togetherness with each cohort of teacher candidates.
  • The department is equipped with two model classrooms.
  • Many education majors gain practical experiences while working at Kids’ Kampus, a child-care facility located near the campus.
  • Many education majors tutor other college students in the Learning Center, volunteer with the Joe Mertz Center, or participate in Spring Break mission trips.
  • We have a required multicultural practicum during the college’s January term.  All education majors spend full days in urban classrooms.
