- Elementary education majors are
eligible for State of Indiana teaching licenses in early childhood and
middle childhood.
- A special education minor
prepares teaching candidates to provide mild intervention in grades K-6.
(more details...)
- Secondary education majors
will be licensed to teach
middle school and high school art, biology, business,
chemistry, English, mathematics, or social
studies.
- All-grade majors will be licensed
to teach K-12 art, music, or physical education/health.
Special Features of
our Program
- Many local principals express very positive opinions about Huntington Universitys
education programs, pre-service teachers, and graduates.
- The department is
NCATE accredited.
- The education program is among the largest academic departments at Huntington University.
- All the education professors have K-12 teaching experience
and graduate school study. Five department faculty members have
earned doctorates in their area of
specialization. Most have over 15 years
experience teaching college and supervising student teachers.
- Students get into classrooms every semester of their program, ensuring wide exposure to
different grade levels and teaching and learning styles.
- The program has a junior block in which we schedule elementary methods courses,
finishing exams a month early and providing an
every-day, all-morning field experience for four weeks
each semester.
- The junior block creates a camaraderie and sense of belonging and
togetherness with each cohort of teacher candidates.
- The department is equipped with two model classrooms.
- Many education majors gain practical experiences while working at Kids Kampus, a
child-care facility located near the campus.
- Many education majors tutor other college students
in the
Learning Center, volunteer with the
Joe Mertz Center, or
participate in Spring Break mission trips.
- We have a required multicultural practicum during the colleges January term.
All education majors spend full days in urban classrooms.
