Education Department Faculty
Dr. Terrell Peace, Director of Teacher Education, Department Chair, and Professor of Education. Before joining the Huntington University Education Department in 1998, Dr. Peace taught at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth, Texas, where he was an Associate Professor of Education and chaired the Foundations of Education department. In addition to university teaching, he has taught K-6 math and science and is currently seeking certification at the secondary level. He is a member of the national board of the Association of Teacher Educators. His dissertation was entitled, A Content Analysis of the Questions of Jesus in Relation to Bloom's Taxonomy of Educational Objectives. He is also co-author of The Teaching Ministry of the Church, published in 1995. Professor Susan Burson, instructor for early childhood and elementary science methods courses. Professor Burson also supervises student teachers. Before coming to Huntington University, she taught Kindergarten at Jessamine Early Learning Village in Wilmore, Ky. Professor Burson received her Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood Education at Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, N.C., and a Masters degree in Elementary Education at Georgetown College in Georgetown, Ky. Burson has also taken related coursework at Asbury Theological Seminary and is currently enrolled at Ball State University where she is pursuing the doctorate degree. Email: sburson@huntington.edu
Dr. Stephen Holtrop, Assistant Dean for Assessment, NCATE Coordinator, Associate Professor of Education. Dr. Holtrop teaches the secondary education courses and coordinates the department's program revisions needed for state and national accreditation. He graduated from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, with a degree in secondary English education. For six years, he taught in Miami, FL, and Orange City, IA. His Masters degree from the University of Iowa was in English education and journalism education, and he pursued his doctorate in English education with an emphasis on teaching writing. Dr. Holtrop has been the state chair for NCATE accreditation teams at other colleges around the state and co-edited a book entitled Nurturing and Reflective Teachers: A Christian Approach for the 21st Century. He and his wife, Sharon, a graduate student in sociology at Purdue University, have three children. Dr. Holtrop enjoys sailing, computers, photography, home improvements, and swimming. Email:

Dr. Evelyn Priddy, Professor of Education,
graduated from Huntington University with a degree in elementary
education. She completed her doctoral degree in reading and elementary
education at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. She taught at the
elementary level for thirteen years and supervised the K-12 reading
programs of a nearby school district for five years. Dr. Priddy came to
Huntington University in 1990 and teaches the reading, language arts and
differentiated curriculum elementary methods courses.
She is a member of the Indiana State Reading Association and serves on
the Board of Editors for the Indiana Reading Journal. She participates
in the Little Turtle Reading Council, the local chapter of Delta Kappa
Gamma Society International, Horace Mann Elementary School Advisory
Board, Project Challenge Advisory Board, and the Education Committee
for the Historic Forks of the Wabash. Dr. Priddy is also Vice President
of Huntington Metro Kiwanis Club. She belongs to Trinity United
Methodist Church and North Indiana Emmaus Community.

Dr. Cynthia Steury, Assistant Dean for Faculty Development, Director of Clinical Experiences, and Associate Professor of Education. Dr. Steury enjoys teaching childrens literature and math methods. Prior to coming to Huntington College in 1980, she taught at both public and private schools in grades one through five. Doctor Steury graduated from Huntington University with a degree in elementary education. She earned a Master of Arts degree from Bowling Green State University and her doctorate in Elementary Education and Educational Administration from Ball State University. At HC she teaches courses in math methods, children's literature, and adolescent literature and serves as Curriculum Consultant for the Lilly-grant funded Mindscape Program, a collaborative education project designed to bring local school children to a nature center owned by the college. Professor Kathy Turner, instructor in the Education Department. Prior to coming to Huntington University she taught in the Education Department at Central Christian College in McPherson, Kansas. Professor Turner has twenty years of teaching experience in public education in Kansas and Illinois with the last sixteen being in Special Education. She holds teaching certificates in Physical Education, Elementary Special Education and Social Studies. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Greenville College in Illinois and a Master’s degree in Educational Psychology with emphasis in Learning Disabilities from Wichita State University in Kansas. At HC she teaches the exceptional child class, social studies methods, and supervises student teachers. She and her husband Gary, who is the Athletic Director and tennis coach at Huntington University are the parents of three children and enjoy tennis, swimming, and traveling in their spare time. Dr. Paul Worfel, Assistant Professor of Education, is the newest addition to the education faculty. He recently completed his doctorate in curriculum studies at Indiana University in Bloomington. His minor was educational policy studies. Dr. Worfel earned his Bachelors degree in music education from Central Michigan University and soon after completed a Masters in performance and literature at Eastman School of Music. He completed a Masters in philosophical and sociological foundations of education prior to seeking his doctorate. His teaching experience ranges from Kindergarten to adult including Indiana Wesleyan (Adult and Professional Studies), Indiana University, and nineteen years in public school. In addition to teaching he was founder and executive director of Homes In Service Ministries, a foster care program for hard-to-place teenagers located in Rochester, N.Y. His research interests include rural education and pre-service teacher education. He plays the trombone professionally, skis, canoes, and backpacks. He has been married to Kristie, who is a professional mime, for more than thirty years. Together they have two grown children Philip and Rebekah, a son-in-law Steve, and granddaughter Emily, the newest addition to the family. Email:
