Fall 2005

Dr. Doughty to present colloquium
Dr. Del Doughty, associate professor of English, will present the fall colloquium, "Focus on Excellence," on Monday, November 21, 2005, from 8 to 9 p.m. His focus will be writing and Haiku poetry.

English major, Stacey Maifeld published
Stacey Maifeld, a senior English major from Fort Wayne, had an article published by Hobson's College View. "A Day in the Life of a Christian College Student:  Looking at what your life at college could be" was written for a communication class last spring and can be viewed online by clicking here.

Martin and Doughty commissioned to write essays                                        Dr. Todd Martin, associate professor of English, completed an article on Julia Alvarez's novel, In the Time of the Butterflies. Dr. Del Doughty, associate professor of English, completed an article on Ernest Hemingway's novel, For Whom the Bell Tolls. Both essays were commissioned for inclusion in a two-volume work, Literary Themes for Students: War and Peace.

Heller presents paper at Ontario conference
Dr. Jack Heller, assistant professor of English, recently presented a paper, "Parodies of Grace in Timon of Athens," at the 17th Elizabethan Theatre Conference held in Waterloo, Ontario on June 16.

Spring 2005

Nimtz and Tinon win national scholarships, Tinon published
Six Alpha Chi Honor Society members attended the Alpha Chi National Convention in St. Louis April 7-9.  At the convention junior English major Rebekah Nimtz was named a Nolle Scholarship Winner for 2005-2006.  Rachel Tinon, a 2004-2005 Nolle Scholar, recently had her winning paper, "Bruised Reed, Smoking Flax," published in the Alpha Chi Recorder.  Also, at the recent Sigma Tau Delta Honor Society Convention, Rachel Tinon was awarded the top scholarship, the Regnery Scholarship, which recognizes excellence in both academic scholarship and chapter service.

Urschel presents two papers
Dr. Linda Urschel, professor of English, gave two presentations at the annual conference of the South Central Society for Eighteenth Century Studies this week. The first paper was entitled, “The Truth Shall Make You Free:  The Trials and Tribulations of Mary Rowlandson, Harriet Jacobs, and Anne Bradstreet” and the second was “Literature to Die For:  The Didactic Writing of Jonathan Edwards, Mary Rowlandson, and Michael Wigglesworth.” The conference took place on St. Simon’s Island off the coast of Georgia.
