If you are an English major or if you tell someone you plan to major in English, the first assumption they make is: "So, you're going to be a teacher." Yet, while the teaching profession is among one of the more frequented by English majors, it is certainly not the only thing one can do with a degree in English. In fact, more English majors go into the entertainment industry and into top- and mid-level management than into the educational field. Why is this? Primarily because intensive writing and analysis of literature provide the English major with strong communication and critical thinking skills. Couple this with a solid liberal arts education, and English majors become one of the more versatile job candidates. According to The College Majors Handbook, "Not many English majors work in jobs that are related to their major. The reason is that English is not an occupation but an ability that provides a foundation on which other occupational skills can be developed" (387). Following is a table adapted from The College Majors Handbook:
Other specific occupations available to English majors with only a bachelor's degree include: Bibliographers, Columnists, Media Specialists, Reading Specialists/Consultants, Technical Writers, Book Store Managers, Copy Editors, Editors, Journalists, Lobbyists, Publishers, Reporters, and Speech Writers. For a list of the general areas in which English Majors usually find jobs along with the types of employers and steps to preparing for certain careers, consult this page. This and a list of similar opportunities for other Majors can be found here. You may also want to consult some of the materials found at the Huntington University Career Services page. For more information about the kinds of on-the-job duties employed English majors usually perform, the general range of salaries, the potential for on-the-job training, and more, consult The College Majors Handbook (Indianapolis: JIST Works, Inc., 1999), which can be found in the Career Development Office or your local library. |
