Internship
An
internship places the student in an on-the-job learning experience
under the direction of a mentor. It is practice-oriented and requires
that the student has knowledge of, and understands the basic skills of,
the job. An internship provides real world experience; it is not
simply an entry-level job. It is intended to place the student outside
of the College-classroom environment and to provide realistic
experiences for one's future career. These experiences can be paid or
unpaid, but the emphasis is on the learning experience. Internships
would most generally be for a junior or senior level student who has
had direct classroom instruction which corresponds with the experience.
Practicum
A
practicum places the student in an exploratory learning situation. It
provides supervised observation of a particular career or profession
and exposes the student to the organization through participation in
its operations. Projects and assignments are completed which expose the
student to important elements of the profession. Students would most
generally be classified as sophomores or juniors.
Job Shadow
Job
shadowing is an informal process, usually of short duration, (like
J-Term) in which students observe the daily routines and activities of
professionals in the students' field of study. Job shadowing provides
an opportunity for students to see, on a limited basis, how skills and
knowledge acquired in class are applied in the real world. Job
Shadowing students would probably be freshman or sophomore’s, but could
include upper classmen as well.
Projects
Class
Project is an assignment, which is required to be completed as part of
a class, in which the group of students work with an outside
organization to solve a particular problem(s) or attain a certain
goal(s). It allows students the ability to transfer academic theories
and principles into action.
A
Special Project is an assignment in which a student works with an
outside organization to solve a particular problem(s) or attain a
certain goal(s). It allows the student the ability to transfer
academic theories and principles into action.
