What is an Internship?
An internship can be defined as a real-world work experience where students take on temporary roles as “employees” in a company or organization.  An internship can supply students with the hands-on experience necessary to help them clarify their career goals and enhance their ability to secure future employment.  Each academic department at Huntington University develops its own learning goals and grading criteria for its interns.  Therefore, students must involve their faculty advisor in the planning process.   This opportunity is typically available for Juniors and Seniors.

What is a Practicum?
A practicum places the student in a practice learning situation.  It provides supervised observation of a particular career or profession and exposure to the functioning of an organization through participation in its operations. Students are encouraged to relate and interpret their experiences through frequent conferences with a faculty supervisor.  A practicum is exploratory rather than culminating.  Projects and assignments are completed which expose the student to important elements of the profession.  This opportunity is typically available for Sophomores and Juniors.

What is a Job Shadow?
Job shadowing is an informal process, usually of short duration, in which students observe the daily routines and activities of employed professionals in the students' field of study. Job shadowing provides an opportunity for students to see, on a limited basis, how skills and knowledge acquired in the class guidelines are applied in the real world.  This opportunity is typically available for Freshmen and Sophomores.

How Do I Qualify?
In order to qualify for an experience, the following guidelines must be met:

  • Students must be in good standing with the University.  No student may apply for an experiential learning opportunity (ELO) if he/she is on academic probation.
  • The ELO must be directly related to your major or occupational goal, and approved by your faculty advisor or supervising professor prior to applying for the ELO.

How Will I Be Graded?
Your grade is made up of two components:

  • Your faculty supervisor’s evaluation and departmental requirements.

  • Your worksite final evaluation (filled out by direct supervisor).

Will I Be Paid?
Some internships are paid and some are not.  It depends on the company/organization.  Your purpose, however, for completing an internship should be for the experience and the opportunity it affords.  We will assist you in finding a company or organization that will give you good experience and introduce you to successful people in your field.  Remember, this is an investment in your future.
