COURSE DESCRIPTION
Students will
develop a Biblical and theological foundation of relational youth
evangelism. The course will include a critique of modern youth evangelism
techniques based on theological premises and psycho-social developmental
issues. Students will also learn and evaluate Youth for Christ’s 3Story
Evangelism® approach to doing discipleship evangelism.
(3 credits)
A WORD FROM PROFESSOR
GERALI . . .
Evangelism - a word that
tends to conjure up negative images for both believers and nonbelievers. As
a youth minister you probably are deeply concerned for both personally
reaching out to students and for equipping your students to reach their
peers. Yet it’s hard isn’t it? You have a desire to be part of God’s
process of changing lives, you love students, but perhaps your experience
with evangelism is something less than positive. My
hope is that this class will be of real help to you in your evangelism
journey.
-
This class will
contribute to your Biblical and theological foundation of discipleship
evangelism. Discipleship evangelism (at least in my mind) implies that
the goal of evangelism is “disciples” (as opposed to “converts”). We’ll
be studying the Bible, trying to look afresh at just what God is calling
us to do in evangelism.
-
From the
Biblical/theological foundation that you’ll develop we’ll move on to
explore the ramifications of that foundation to varying evangelism
models. I’m the kind of person who is deeply concerned about why we do
what we do, but if our foundation leaves us without a good plan of
action (youth ministers are almost always doers), it is less than ideal
in my mind. I want our ministries to have integrity and to be effective
so I’ll be encouraging you to evaluate and develop a plan for evangelism
within your specific ministry setting.
-
I believe that
motivation is a key component to evangelism. My desire is that when you
finish with this class that you feel deeply encouraged and equipped to
strengthen the evangelism efforts within your ministry situation.
