Book featuring Michelson article wins award

HUNTINGTON, IN—The Encyclopedia of Eastern Europe: From the Congress of Vienna to the Fall of Communism, edited by Richard Frucht, has been named by CHOICE Magazine as an Outstanding Academic Book for 2000.  CHOICE, published by the American Library Association, described the volume as an "excellent and well-organized resource covering nearly 200 years of the region's history and civilization... Highly recommended..."

According to the editor, "The cornerstones of the encyclopedia are the articles on countries and regions of Eastern Europe: Albania, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and the countries that once made up Yugoslavia.... These articles are both detailed and concise, offering the reader a brief but comprehensive introduction into a country's history during the last two centuries." 

One of these articles, the country article on Romania, was authored by Dr. Paul Michelson, Distinguished Professor of History at Huntington College. Michelson also wrote six shorter contributions to the encyclopedia. 

This is the second time in three years that Dr. Michelson has been an author or co-author of a volume recognized by CHOICE. His study, Romanian Politics, 1859-1871, was named an Outstanding Academic Book for 1998. 

Michelson joined the faculty of Huntington College in 1974.  He holds a Ph.D. in history from Indiana University, and specializes in East European and Soviet history with a particular expertise in Romanian history and culture. He has been a three time senior Fulbright scholar in Romania, has published widely, has traveled extensively, and is frequent consultant to numerous agencies, including government bodies, on Romanian and East European affairs. Michelson serves as a member and secretary of the National Board of the Society for Romanian Studies, and is editor of the SRS Newsletter. He is co-editor of the newsletter of the Conference on Faith and History.
