RELEASE
April 23, 2002
HUNTINGTON,
IN—The Huntington College Music Department will hold its second annual
Concerto Winners Concert on Friday, April 26, at 7 p.m.. The performance
will take place on the main stage of the Merillat Centre for the Arts. The
concert will feature winners from the second annual HC Concerto
Competition held in October of last year. The performers include,
Benjamin Kendall, Sarah Stanek, Amy Rockwell, Eva Swan and Katie Smith. Kendall
comes from Branson, Mo., where he grew up in the Ozark Hills
entertainment industry. His main involvement there was as the first
tenor in a Barbershop Quartet, “Perfect Fourth,” for two years.
Kendall earned his Bachelor of Music in Education from Southwest Baptist
University. He then went on to Southwestern Baptist Theological in Fort
Worth, Texas, to receive a Master of Music in Conducting while serving
as Associate Minister of Music at First Baptist, McKinney, Texas. Since
then, he has been a missionary to Spain where he was the music leader
for the 2001 Spanish National Youth Convention. He is currently serving
the Music Department, teaching Applied Voice and Voice Class, Worship
Ensemble, Orchestra and is the staff accompanist. Stanek,
originally from Indianapolis, Ind., is pursing degrees in both Music and
Theatre. She recently performed the role of Miss Silverpeal in
Mozart’s Impresario and completed her senior recital. Stanek has been
featured in productions such as Antigone, Side Show,
The Telephone and has performed in several Longaker Honors
Recitals. Along with performing, Stanek is a Presidential Scholar and a
member of the Alpha Chi Honor Society. Stanek will be directing Icarus’s
Mother by Sam Shepard in the upcoming One-Act Play Festival at
Huntington College. This summer she will be participating in an Opera
Program in Italy. Rockwell,
a junior from Portland, Ind., is a Choral Music Education major. Her
major instrumental area is in piano while her minor instrumental area is
in vocal. She has participated in many public performances, including
various student recitals as well as the Longaker Honors Recital in the
spring of 2001. She has been playing for various churches since the age
of 10, having begun piano lessons at age seven. Swan,
a senior from Campbellsville, Ky., majors in Theatre-Performance and
minors in Music. Considering most of her stage presentations are for
theatre productions, such as As You Like It, A Christmas Carol,
Side Show, WASP and others, she’s glad to express her
passion as a vocalist, rather than solely as an actress. Smith,
a junior from Oak Creek, Col., is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Music
Degree in French Horn Performance. Smith is a Presidential Scholar and
has been a horn player for over nine years. She has held the position of
principal horn at five of the ten high school honor bands she attended,
including Colorado All-State Concert Band in 1997. Smith is the
principal hornist for the Huntington College Wind and Brass Ensembles.
She has performed with the college orchestra for such works as
Poulenc’s Gloria and the Beethoven and Schumann piano
concertos. Smith has also played in the pit orchestra for Randy
Cochran’s Signatures and most recently for Huntington
College’s production of Side Show. As a soloist, she has
performed in four Longaker Honors Recitals and last year’s Concerto
Concert. To
