Eight Foresters
head to National Track Championships FOR RELEASE February 20, 2002 (more
track and field photos) John Ngure (Thaika, Kenya) will toe the line starting Friday, March 1, in the 5000 meters. Ngure, who finished second at the NAIA National Cross Country Championships in November, is a seven-time All-American for the Foresters. He heads into the competition with the fifth fastest time this season (14:44.54) and will be a marked man racing for top honors. Huntington native Danielle Vohs (Huntington, Ind./Huntington North) will be running two races throughout the week. She will first join with teammates Aimee Sullivan (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North), Erin Abbey (Millbury, Ohio/Lake) and Jenny Cook (Gregory, Mich./Fowlerville) in the distance medley relay. The DMR will be the first event for any Forester as they run their preliminary race at 9 p.m., Thursday night. If they move on to finals, they will run again at 5 p.m., Saturday. Vohs, who is a three-time All-American, will run the 1000 meter preliminary on Friday to try and move on to Saturday’s final. Vohs was the national runner-up in that event one year ago and took third in 2000. She posted the fourth fastest time this season with a 2:59.55. Jonathan Doyle (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) qualified in the 55 high hurdles with a time of 8.08. This will be his first appearance on the national level. Debuting with Doyle will be Rick Hammer (Hudson, Ind./Prairie Heights) in the 3000 meters and Billy Kurtz (Woodburn, Ind./Woodlan) in the shot put. Hammer posted a time of 9:04.03, and Kurtz has the 17th-best throw this season at 48-06. The Huntington College Foresters compete in 14 intercollegiate sports for men and women. In the past five years HC has produced 27 All-Americans and 54 All-America Scholar Athletes.
