HUNTINGTON,
IN – Four Forester
track and field athletes will travel to Olathe, Kansas, with head
coach Tom King to the 2002
Pepsi-NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships. The meet,
hosted by the Olathe Chamber of Commerce, is scheduled for Thursday, May
23 through Saturday, May 25 at the Olathe District Activity Center.
Danielle
Vohs (Huntington, Ind./Huntington North), Erin
Abbey (Millbury, Ohio/Lake), Aimee
Sullivan (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) and Jenny
Cook
(Gregory, Mich./Fowlerville) will join together in the 4x800 relay.
Going into the meet, the relay is ranked ninth nationally with a time of
9:32.42. Their preliminary race will be run on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. The
top eight teams will move onto finals, held Friday at 5 p.m. Vohs holds
the school record in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:14.46. Teammates
Cook and Sullivan rank third and fifth, respectively, on the Foresters’
all-time top ten list in the 800. Cook turned in a time of 2:19.06
this season while Sullivan turned in a 2:20.80. Abbey, who has only run
the 800 in the relay, is capable of posting a relay split similar to her
teammates times.
Vohs,
a four-time All-American, is ranked fifth nationally in the 1500-meter
run. This season, Vohs
broke the Foresters’ longest-standing school record in that event on
April 6. Since then, she has broken her own record two other times and now
heads into nationals with a time of 4:36.95. Vohs was conference champion
in that event and in the 800-meter run. She will run her 1500-meter run
preliminary race on Thursday at 11:50 a.m., with hopes to move onto finals
on Saturday at 1:40 p.m.
Abbey,
HC’s premier anchor athlete this season, will also compete in the
women’s long jump at the national championships. Her jump of 17-07.5 met
the provisional national qualification mark and is second on the
Foresters’ all-time top ten list. Abbey was conference champion in that
event this season and in the 400 hurdles. This season, she anchored the
4x100 relay, 4x400 relay and will anchor the 4x800 relay in Olathe this
Thursday. The long jump competition will get underway on Thursday at 3
p.m., with finals immediately following the preliminary jumps.
