Ngugi,
Thwaits earn Athlete of the Week honors
FOR RELEASE November 11,
2002
HUNTINGTON, IN—
The Huntington
College athletic department
announced its Athletes of the Week for the
week of November 4 – 10, 2002.
Women’s cross
country sophomore Elizabeth Ngugi and
men’s basketball junior Ryan Thwaits earned the honors for their
excellent efforts during the week’s competitions.
Ngugi,
a psychology major from
Thaika, Kenya, had her biggest race of the season at the NAIA Region VIII
Cross Country Championships. Running number two for the Foresters, Ngugi
stepped up with a fifth-place finish and helped the team to finish third
overall. Ngugi’s effort, along with every member of the Forester squad,
launched them into a bid to run at the NAIA National Championships in
Kenosha, Wis., on November 23. Ngugi’s finish earned her All-Region honors
as did the finishes of teammates Natalie Guenin (third place) and Jenny
Cook (11th place).
Thwaits,
a business major from
Syracuse, Ind. (Fairfield High School), was a driving force for the
Forester basketball team in its opening week of play. Thwaits led the team
to a 3-0 record with his ruthless play and clutch free throws, as they
outlasted Urbana University (84-80), Spring Arbor University (92-91) and
St. Xavier University (71-70). Thwaits averaged just over 13 points, 11
rebounds and six assists for the week. In Saturday’s game, he played so
hard he tore the sole off the bottom of his shoe! Thwaits is a three-time
Dean’s List honoree.
