earn Athlete of the Week honors

HUNTINGTON, IN— The Huntington College athletic department announced its
Athletes of the Week for the week of January 27 – February 2, 2003.
Women’s track and field senior Erin Abbey and men’s
track and field junior
Chris Buehrer earned the honors for their excellent efforts during the
week’s competitions.
Abbey,
an
educational
ministries major from Millbury, Ohio (Lake
High School), led the women’s track
team to a second-place finish in its season opener at Ohio Northern on
Friday. Abbey’s long jump of 17-00.75 won the event by well over a foot
and met the NAIA national qualification provisional mark. Abbey also ran
well on the track, finishing second in the 400 meters in 1:02.53 and
second in the 300 meters in 44.24. Abbey is a three-time All-American
Scholar Athlete recipient and earned All-American honors on the track last
spring in the 4x800 meter relay. She is a member of the Alpha Chi National
Honor Society, Chi Alpha Sigma (the athletic honor society), and has
earned many Dean’s List honors.
Buehrer,
an elementary education major from Archbold,
Ohio (Archbold High School), ran a
commanding 5000 meter race in the men’s season opener at Ohio Northern on
Friday and helped the men’s squad to a second-place finish. His winning
time of 16:53.54 was 25 seconds faster than second place finisher,
teammate Craig Perry. Buehrer is an All-American Scholar Athlete recipient
for men’s cross country. He is a member of the Alpha Chi National Honor
Society, Kappa Delta
Pi (the International Honor Society for Educators),
and has earned many Dean’s List honors.
The
Huntington College Foresters compete in 14 intercollegiate sports for men
and women. In the past six years, Huntington has produced 39 All-America
honors and 67 All-America Scholar Athlete honors. Huntington College is a comprehensive Christian
