Bortner, Hill earn Athlete of the Week honors
FOR RELEASE
March 3,
2003
HUNTINGTON, IN— The Huntington College athletic department announced its
Athletes of the Week for the week of February 24-March
2, 2003. Women’s track
and field junior Melissa
Bortner and men’s basketball senior Adam Hill earned the honors for their excellent efforts during the week’s
competitions.
Bortner,
a English education major from
Huntington, Ind. (East Noble
High School), served as the Forester track and field's
all-around athlete as she competed in four events at the Fred Wilt
Memorial Invitational at Anderson University on Friday. Bortner won the 55
hurdles by almost a complete second, posting her fastest time of the
season at 8.84 seconds. It is in this event that she qualified to the NAIA
Indoor Track and Field National Championships to be held Thursday through
Saturday, March 6-8, in Johnson City, Tenn. In Friday's non-scored meet,
Bortner also landed her longest jump of the season in the long jump,
marking 16-01.75, for second place behind teammate and fellow national
qualifier Erin Abbey. Bortner rounded out the day finishing third in the
high jump and fourth in the 400 meters. She is also a member of the
Forester volleyball team.
Hill,
a business management major from Parker City, Ind. (Wapahani High School),
was named the Mid-Central Conference's Co-Player of the Year with Grace's
Matt Abernathy on Friday. Hill led the Foresters to two MCC Tournament
victories last week, as they first defeated Goshen by 31 points on
Wednesday and then routed Bethel on Saturday by 23 points to reach the MCC
Tournament Championship to be held Tuesday, March 4, against Taylor. Hill
scored 12 points against Goshen on Wednesday and 21 points against Bethel
on Saturday. By earning the MCC Player of the Year honor, Hill keeps
Huntington College streak alive for the third year in a row. Alumnus David
Porter earned the prestigious honor for the Foresters during the past two
years. The Foresters are currently 26-7 on the season and a win on Tuesday
will give them an automatic berth to the NAIA National Tournament.
The
Huntington College Foresters compete in 14 intercollegiate sports for men
and women. In the past six years, Huntington has produced 39 All-America
honors and 67 All-America Scholar Athlete honors. Huntington College is a comprehensive Christian
