April 21, 2003
HUNTINGTON, IN— The Huntington College athletics department announced its
Athletes of the Week for the week of April 14-20, 2003. Women’s
track and field junior Brooke Welch and men’s
golf freshman Wes Knuth earned
the honors for their excellent efforts during the week’s competitions.
Welch,
a broadcast communication and
public relations double
major from Berne, Ind. (South Adams
High School), contributed to the Lady Foresters
first-place finish at the Earlham Invitational on Saturday. Dominating the
3000 meter Steeplechase, Welch won the event by 43 seconds. Her time of
11:59.40 breaks her own school record, set just a week prior at Indiana
Little State, by 28 seconds. It also meets the NAIA Outdoor National Track
and Field Championships provisional mark. Welch was also a member of the
winning 4x400 relay which won by seven seconds at Earlham. She is a
two-time NAIA Cross Country National Championships team qualifier and an
NAIA All-American Scholar Athlete in cross country. Welch has earned
numerous dean's list honors and is a member of Chi Alpha Sigma (the
Huntington College athletic honor society).
Knuth,
an elementary education major from Berne, Ind. (South Adams High School),
was the top finisher for the Foresters at the Coldwater Collegiate
Invitational on Thursday. The Foresters finished 8th out of 15 in the team
standings. Knuth led Huntington, shooting a 78.
After starting his round bogey, bogey, double-bogey,
he then went the last 15 holes
at just two over par.
His score tied him for sixth out of 74 golfers. Earlier
in the week, the Foresters finished 5th at Grace with Knuth shooting an
80, the second-best score for the team. Knuth is a dean's list honoree.
