Abbey, Porter earn Athlete of the Week honors

HUNTINGTON, IN— The Huntington College athletics department announced its
Athletes of the Week for the week of April 21-27, 2003. Women’s track and
field senior Erin Abbey and men’s baseball
sophomore Brian Porter earned
the honors for their excellent efforts during the week’s competitions.
Abbey,
an educational ministries major from Millbury, Ohio (Lake High School),
helped lead the Foresters to a third place finish in the Mid-Central
Conference Track and Field Championships with her three individual first
place finishes. She won the 400 meter dash in 59.35, the 400 hurdles in
1:05.83, and the long jump with a leap of 17' 7". Abbey also finished
sixth in the 200 and was a member of the 4x100 and 4x400 relays that each
placed fourth. She is a three-time All-American Scholar Athlete recipient
and earned All-American honors on the track last spring in the 4x800 meter
relay. Abbey is a member of the Alpha Chi National Honor
Society, Chi
Alpha Sigma (the athletic honor society), and has earned many Dean’s List
honors.
Porter,
a recreation management major from Alexandria, Indiana (Alexandria-Monroe
High School), led the Foresters to a 7-1 week on the baseball diamond.
For the week, Porter went 15 for 30 from the plate, including four doubles
and five homeruns, which give him eight on the season. He had at least
one RBI in every game and finished with 18 for the week. With his
impressive offensive display, he raised his batting average from .415 to
.438 and his slugging percentage from .585 to a team-leading .723. Porter
is the leftfielder from the 20-12 Foresters.
The
Huntington College Foresters compete in 14 intercollegiate sports for men
and women. In the past six years, Huntington has produced 43 All-America
honors and 69 All-America Scholar Athlete honors. Huntington College is a
