Athlete of the Week honors Abbey, Burris

HUNTINGTON, IN— The Huntington College athletics department announced its Athletes of the Week for the week of March 31-April 6, 2003. Women’s track and field senior Erin Abbey and men’s baseball junior Tim Burris earned the honors for their excellent efforts during the week’s competitions.

Abbey, an educational ministries major from Millbury, Ohio (Lake High School), won three events at the Manchester Invitational, leading the Foresters to second place in the team standings. Abbey took firsts in the long jump (17-03.50), 400 meters (1:01.92) and 400 meter hurdles (1:11.36). She also anchored the winning 4x400 meter relay team. She is a three-time All-American Scholar Athlete recipient and earned All-American honors on the track last spring in the 4x800 meter relay. Abbey is a member of the Alpha Chi National Honor Society, Chi Alpha Sigma (the athletic honor society), and has earned many Dean’s List honors.

Burris, a physical education major from Huntington, Ind. (Huntington North High School), helped the Foresters to a 3-1 week on the baseball diamond. In the Foresters’ dismantling of Manchester, 13-5, in the second game of the double header on Tuesday, Burris hit his first home run of the season on his way to a three-hit game with four RBI and three runs. On Thursday, Burris tallied a double and one run in a 11-3 victory over Saint Francis. In the nightcap with the Cougars, he clubbed a double and took the win as he pitched five innings, allowing one run on two hits while striking out five batters. The Foresters are currently 7-7 on the season with Burris leading the team in batting average (.472), slugging percentage (.677), stolen bases (6) and most times to be walked by a pitcher (11).

In the past six years, Huntington has produced 43 All-America honors and 69 All-America Scholar Athlete honors.
