RELEASE September 23, 2002
HUNTINGTON, IN— The Huntington
College athletic department announced its Athletes of the Week for the
week of Sept. 16 - 22, 2002. Women’s
volleyball senior Melissa Bortner and men’s
soccer freshman Courtney Hamilton earned the honors for their
excellent efforts during the week’s competitions.
Bortner,
an English education
major from Huntington, Ind. (East Noble High School), led the Forester
volleyball team to a 4-1 record over the week. In HC’s win over
Tri-State on Sept. 18, she tallied 10 kills, eight blocks and six digs for
the Lady Foresters’ first win of the season. Bortner continued to roll
throughout the weekend as the team went 3-1 at the Olivet Nazarene
Tournament. In their only loss, Bortner had six kills, four digs and two
aces against Cornerstone. The team bounced back against the University of
Illinois-Springfield with Bortner tallying 18 kills and six blocks. In the
win over Judson she downed 11 kills, three blocks and 18 digs, and against
Lindsey Wilson, she had nine kills and three blocks. For her efforts over
the weekend, Bortner was named to the All-Tournament team along with
teammate Bethany Strom. Bortner
currently leads the team in kills per game with 2.7, solo blocks with 23,
and digs per game with 2.6. She is also a member of the Forester track and
field team.
Hamilton,
a business economics
major from Tobago, Trinidad & Tobago, was a key member to the men’s
soccer 1-0 victory over Taylor on Sept. 17. Hamilton blocked three shots
on goal to lead the Forester defense and stop the 13-year losing drought
to Taylor. The victory gave the Foresters their first MCC win of the
season, as they are 1-2 in conference action, 3-4 overall.
