HUNTINGTON, IN— The Huntington College athletic department announced its Athletes of the Week for the week of Sept. 23 - 29, 2002. Women’s soccer freshman Christi Shook and men’s tennis freshman Kachinga Sinkala earned the honors for their excellent efforts during the week’s competitions.

(Franklin Community High School), led the women’s soccer team in an undefeated week as the Foresters banked two shutouts in conference action, upping their MCC record to 3-0 and their overall record to 6-3. In HC’s 2-0 victory over Goshen on Sept. 25, Shook scored the first goal of the match in the 81st minute of action and then garnered an assist in the final goal. Against Bethel on Saturday, Shook assisted in the first goal of the game in the 16th minute. In the second half, she scored in the 76th minute off a missed shot by a teammate and two minutes later dribbled down the end line and shot past the Bethel keeper for the final goal of the game. Shook’s shooting and passing skills have been key for the Foresters this year. She frequently sets up hot-hitter Erin Abbey, who now owns the school record for goals in a season with 12.

SinkalaKachinga.jpg (1438145 bytes)Sinkala, an undecided major from St. Marks, Lusaka in Zambia, was a key member to the men’s soccer 2-0 record over the week for the men’s tennis team. Sinkala, who plays no. 1 singles, downed his Bethel opponent 6-2, 6-3 on Sept. 24, and then teamed with Michael Christner for an 8-3 doubles victory. In Saturday’s action against Grace, Sinkala defeated his opponent 6-1, 6-2, and went 8-3 with Christner for yet another doubles victory. The two are undefeated in doubles action so far this season and Sinkala holds a 7-1 singles record. The Forester team is now 6-2 overall, 4-2 in conference action.
