Dr. Clarence Boyer to speak at Huntington CollegeFOR RELEASE FEBRUARY 4, 1998
HUNTINGTON, IN On Monday, February 9, Dr. Clarence Boyer and the Huntington College Choir will present a concert-lecture entitled "Old Ship of Zion: African American Gospel Music." The presentation will be held in the main auditorium of the Merillat Centre for the Arts at 8:00 PM. The public is cordially invited to attend. There is no admission charge.
Dr. Boyer is Professor of Music Theory and African American Music at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Since 1978, Boyer has directed the Vocal Jazz and African American Music Ensemble of the University of Massachusetts. Along with his brother, James, he has traveled throughout 40 states performing gospel music. The Boyer Brothers have recorded on the Savoy and Nashboro labels. They have appeared in concerts, festivals and on television in over 300 performances, alone and with such other gospel singers as Mahalia Jackson, Clara Ward, Alex Bradford, Dorothy Love Coates and James Cleveland.
The recipient of a Ford Foundation Fellowship, Clarence Boyer serves on the editorial advisory board of the journal, Rejoice, the board of directors of the National Council for the Traditional Arts of Washington, D.C., and as a consultant for the Smithsonian Institution. Boyer's book, How Sweet The Sound: The Golden Age of Gospel, was published by Elliott & Clark Publishing in September 1995.
Dr. Boyer's appearance at Huntington College is the next in this year's Forester Lecture Series. The Forester Lecture Series is designed to bring important speakers and ideas to the attention of the Huntington College student body and the local community.
