Rebecca St. James graces Huntington College
Acclaimed Christian musician evangelizes through community concert
HUNTINGTON, IN JAN 15, 1998 " Part Mother Teresa, and part Billy Grahamwith smoke and lasers thrown in," said Christianity Today magazine of Rebecca St. James, who will be giving a concert at Huntington Colleges Merillat Center for Fine Arts on Saturday, February 7, 1998 at 7:00 p.m.
Tickets for the event are $11, $13, and $15, and can be purchased beginning Monday, January 19 by calling the Merillat Center Box Office at (260) 359-4261 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
St. James earned both Grammy and Dove Award nominations for her 1996 album, "God," while her devotional book "40 Days With God" topped the youth/teen division of Christian book charts for seven months. She has been called a spokesperson for her generationcalling her peers to turn their hearts toward God and stand completely and totally for Him. She explains "I felt God was saying that the world is just bowing to idols of drugs, of alcohol, of money, of selfishness, just all these things. I felt that God was calling us [teenagers] just to be totally radical for Him
not compromising, not bowing down, but just standing for God."Rebecca matured quickly as a singer/songwriter, with a degree of confidence and poise striking in one so young. She refutes the conventional wisdom that hers is a lost generation. "When I look around I see a selfish generation," she notes, "and I feel very burdened. That's why I want to encourage them with my music. I believe we can only find happiness when we live for something other than ourselves."
Because of her continual willingness to serve God and give to others, St. James has been recognized on Christianity Todays list of Top 50 Up & Coming Evangelical Leaders under the age of 40. The magazine listed her album "God," her involvement with Compassion International, and her mission to help young people become "sold out for God" as the elements that have "established her as a rising force in Christian music and ministry."
