FOR RELEASE APRIL 8, 1998

HUNTINGTON, IN—Sarah Andrews of Martinsville, Indiana, will present her Senior Recital at Huntington College on April 18 at 2 p.m. Miss Andrews is pursuing a degree in music education, with concentrations in violin, voice and piano.

She will perform four pieces for the violin: Handel's Violin Sonata No.4, "Vocalise" by Rachmaninov, Bartok's First Rhapsody, and excerpts from Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 3. She will also perform Brahms' Intermezzo on the piano.

"One of the hardest things about these pieces is the variety of styles," says Andrews. "It is difficult to go from the soft, romantic style of Rachmaninov and Brahms to the dissonant, almost caustic, modern style of Bartok. In the many fast sections of the Handel and Mozart works, it is also difficult to make each note come across clearly. Everything must be very precise or it's going to sound mushy."

During her college career, Miss Andrews has been active in the Huntington College Chamber Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Concert Choir, and Cantorei (a women's choir).

Miss Andrews is the daughter of Roger and Carol Andrews of Martinsville, Indiana. She is a 1994 graduate of Mooresville High School in 1994, where she played in the orchestra for four years.

Miss Andrews studied violin with April Kohl-Swansiger during high school. She continued her study at Huntington College under the direction of adjunct professors Martha Barker and Hiromi Ito, concertmaster of the Fort Wayne Philharmonic. She studied piano under the direction of Sue Mann, Sandy Birdsall, and Dr. Patricia Spedden.

"The one who really started me toward music was my kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Nolan," Sarah explains. "When I was five, she told my mother to point me towards the arts. She was so right! I started violin in sixth grade, and piano soon after. My parents were really great about running me to lessons and rehearsals, and everything else. They wouldn't let me quit when I got frustrated or discouraged, but kept telling me to practice and work at it."

"From sixth grade on, Mrs. Fyffe, the orchestra director for Mooresville schools, encouraged me and pushed me to work. She was the one who inspired me to teach. I can't thank her enough."

Miss Andrews is presently completing her student teaching at South Side High School in Fort Wayne, under the supervision of Mr. David Streeter. She is teaching band, orchestra, and music history.
