College hosts annual One-Act Play Festival
FOR RELEASE April 20, 1999
HUNTINGTON, INHuntington College will host its annual One-Act Play Festival April 29 through May 1, with performances at 8:30 p.m. nightly in the Studio Theatre of the Merillat Centre for the Arts. There will not be reserved seating for these performances, as they are free to the public. Be prepared to come early for good seating.
The One Act Play Festival is the final project for the students enrolled in the directing class at Huntington College. Two one-acts will be presented each evening.
Following are brief synopses provided by the student directors:
Action
Thursday, April 29 at 8:30 p.m.
Written by Sam Shepard
Directed by Amy Gantt, an English education major and theatre minor from Thornville, Ohio.
(This play is not recommended for young children.)"Action is the play with no plot, but it's filled with depth and truth about humanity. Action is a mirror of the actions that all men and women make while they forget the meaning of who they are and what they are doing."
Lepers
Friday, April 30 at 8:30 p.m.
Written by Robert G. Barone
Directed by Kriss Hultman, a junior English education major and theatre minor from Spring Arbor, Michigan."Lepers shows how three outcasts deal with their isolation from society. Each "leper" evolves throughout the play, as she comes to the realization that love and hope bring survival and renewal.
The Ugly Duckling

Directed by Kate Mueller, a senior theatre major from Fort Wayne, Indiana."The classic tale told by the creator of Christopher Robin and Winnie the Pooh."
The Proposal
Saturday, May 1 at 8:30 p.m.
Written by Anton Chekhov
Directed by Jamie Koogler, a senior double major in accounting and theatre from Fort Wayne, Indiana."A man visits his neighbor and his neighbors daughter for the sole purpose of making a proposal. When the man finally states his reason to the father and gains permission, he still has to speak with the daughter. Heart palpitations, hunting dogs, principles, land disputes, and Russian stubbornness all get in the way."
Pretty Feet
Saturday, May 1 following "The Proposal"

Directed by Heather Sinclair, a junior English major and theatre minor from Columbus, Ohio."The central theme is the conflict between morals and desires. The questions is what will the main character, Charles, choose? The play is about a college student, Charles, whose intention is to propose to his girlfriend over the weekend. Through the course of the play it is revealed that his intentions to marry his girlfriend are heavily influenced by his desire to be near her fourteen year old sister, whom he is infatuated with. The play focuses on Charles' struggle between his desire for the teenage sister and the moral dilemma of deceiving his girlfriend and being attracted to such a young girl."
Theatre is one of many distinctive academic programs available at Huntington College. Founded in 1897, the Christian liberal arts college today offers graduate and undergraduate degrees in nearly 50 academic concentrations. Huntington College is located on a contemporary, lakeside campus in Huntington, Indiana.
