Huntington students observe Fall Work Day
College volunteers serve the communityFOR RELEASE October 17, 1998
HUNTINGTON, IN Huntington College students will lend a hand to their neighbors throughout the community today as they observe HCs Fall Work Day 1998. The annual event is coordinated by the Colleges Joe Mertz Center for Volunteer Service. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., teams of Huntington College students, faculty and staff will engage in a wide variety of community service projects.
The mens and women's tennis teams are offering a free tennis clinic to area youth at the Colleges Klopfenstein Tennis Courts, adjacent to the Merillat Complex for Physical Education and Recreation.
Alpha Gamma members have volunteered to do landscaping at Victory Noll. Freshman mentors and the members of Alpha Chi will complete some landscaping projects at Kids Kampus. Habitat for Humanity volunteers will dig and clear ground for another home for a needy family.
HCs Student Activities Board will assist with the countys Solid Waste Management project today at Yoeman Park. They will assist with paperwork, lifting, and moving as community members bring in "odd sized" trash.
The womens basketball team and veterans of the HC Outback program will help serve local elderly persons with yard work, housecleaning, washing windows, and cleaning gutters. Huntington College cheerleaders will paint a home.
Several residence hall groups will also tackle similar projects. One will move furniture and clean up at Huntington House. Another will complete some landscaping at Forks of the Wabash Historic Park. A third group will participate in a special craft fair with residents of Millers Merry Manner.
Some Huntington College volunteers will head to Fort Wayne for the day. Student Senate, for example, will work with Love Church. One group will refurbish floors, while another distributes flyers in the neighborhood.
Volunteer service is an integral part of the Huntington College experience. Annually, the schools Joe Mertz Center mobilizes the campus community for more than 10,000 hours of service, helping scores of agencies, churches, and families throughout the regional community.
