George Fortune in concert at the Merillat Centre for the Arts

 

FOR RELEASE-- April 6, 1999

HUNTINGTON, IN— The Merillat Centre for the Arts will host baritone singer, George Fortune, on Thursday, April 29, 1999, at 8:00 p.m. in Longaker Recital Hall. This concert is partially funded by State Farm Insurance agents Terry Larson and Gib Young.

George Fortune has become one of the leading baritones of the Italian repertoire after performing in Augsburg and in Berlin at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. He won the coveted First Prize at the International Competition of the Radio Stations of Germany in Munich, and in the same year he made his debut in the role of Silvio in PAGLIACCI at the famed Vienna Staatsoper. George Fortune studied with the renowned American baritone Todd Duncan.

With Placido Domingo, George Fortune has sung TOSCA, OTELLO, LA GIOCONDA and LA FANCIULLA DEL WEST; in LA BOHEME he has sung Marcello to Luciano Pavarotti’s Rodolfo. In addition to his opera appearances, his love for the Oratorio and Lied is demonstrated in many concert engagements around the world.


George Fortune will arrive in Huntington on April 21st. He will coach individual students and present a master class, perform as bass soloist for the Mozart Requiem, and present a solo recital. The Mozart Requiem will be performed on Friday, April 23re at 8 p.m. in the MCA Auditorium. The recital will be held at 8 p.m. in Longaker Recital Hall on Thursday, April 29th.

 

Dr. David Wallis, Department Chair of the Huntington College Music Department, said "It will be a wonderful educational experience for the people who work with him and hear him in concert."
