Huntington College to celebrate homecoming
Alumni gather for annual reunions and events

FOR RELEASE September 18, 1998

HUNTINGTON, IN— Huntington College will celebrate its annual Homecoming Oct. 2-4. The entire weekend will be filled with events of interest to college alumni and community residents alike.

Homecoming weekend opens with a baseball doubleheader against Glen Oaks College. The game will begin at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 2 in Forest Glen Park. It will be followed by the coronation of the Homecoming King and Queen in front of the administration building at the Alumni Plaza.

A concert will also be featured at 7:30 p.m. Friday by contemporary Christian artists Sierra, Greg Long and special guest Nikki Leonti. Sierra's tight vocal harmonies and inspirational lyrics have landed the trio numerous number-one songs on the CCM charts. The concert will feature works from their new album, The Story of Life. Greg Long will perform "Jesus Saves" and other songs that drive home the simple, pure message of the gospel. Nikki Leonti, a newcomer to the Christian music scene, sings with a voice that is nature far beyond her years. Her debut album, Shelter Me, resonates with audiences of all ages.

Advance reservations are recommended. Fore more information call the Merillat Centre for the Arts at (260) 359-4260 weekdays 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The concert will be followed by a "block party," sponsored by the Student Senate. The event will feature food, fun, games and fellowship with students and alumni, on the mall in front of the Huntington Union Building (HUB).

Saturday morning begins bright and early with the Klopfenstein Centennial Cup Golf Classic. Tee time is 7 a.m. at the LaFontaine Golf Club. Registration for the event is $50. Individual players and foursomes may register through Friday, September 22, by contacting the Office of Alumni Relations at (260) 359-4047.

The annual 5K Fun Run begins at 8 a.m. Saturday morning near the Merillat Complex for Physical Education and Recreation. The event is sponsored by the Alpha Gamma Pi Sorority. Registration is $10.

Those seeking a more restful beginning to the day may enjoy a continental breakfast at the Habecker Dining Commons from 8 to 10 a.m.

From 10 to 1:15 p.m. five-year class reunions, featuring the classes of 1948 (50-year) and 1973 (25-year) will give alumni an opportunity to mingle with old friends in the Habecker Dining Commons. Lunch for students and alumni will be served there from 11:30 to 1:15 p.m.

Huntington College athletes will compete throughout the day. The Forester cross-country team will challenge HC’s alumni runners at 10 a.m. The men's and women's tennis teams will take on Ancilla College, and from 10 to 2 p.m. the volleyball team will participate in a tri-match with Spring Arbor College and St. Francis College. At 12:30, students will brave the chilly waters of Lake Sno-Tip in the annual Homecoming Raft Race. Participants will navigate their makeshift watercraft through a challenging course on the campus’ eight-acre lake.

Immediately following, the Alumni Awards Ceremony will begin at the Alumni Plaza. Alumni of the Year will be named and Distinguished Alumni Citations will be awarded at 3 p.m. Seating will be available.

A reception will be held at Habecker Dining Commons for former and present faculty. Campus tours will be given starting at 4 p.m. from the dining commons.
