The Department of History at Huntington University offers several opportunities for Huntington University history majors to receive financial awards and prizes for academic achievements. These incentives are the result of grateful and committed alumni and friends of the Department. We are very thankful for their financial support of superior academic activity in the study of history. The S. G. Whittle Johnston Memorial Award in HistoryThe S. G. Whittle Johnston Memorial Award is an annual award inaugurated in 2003. It was established by a Huntington College alumna and history major. The award honors the memory of the donor's graduate school mentor, Dr. S.. G. Whittle Johnston of the University of Virginia, who has since passed away. By funding this award, the donor wishes to encourage upper level history students in their study of history. The award goes to the junior or senior history major who submits the most outstanding work of original scholarship to the History Department faculty. Deadline for submissions is during the fall semester, usually by mid-December. Paper. Department faculty then select the winner from the pool of submissions. The winner receives a plaque and a cash award of $1000. The 2007 winner of the Johnston Award was Ms. Christianne Gates, a senior history major from Hodges SC, for her paper "Diplomacy and Democracy: American Response to Turkish Activities in the 1890s and 1910s." The HU News story is here The 2006 winner of the Johnston Award was Mr. Rick Klinedinst, a senior from North Liberty IN, for his paper, "The Brethren Fundamentalist: Church of the Brethren and Fundamentalism, 1945-1952." The paper is an analysis of how British educated circles viewed the U.S. Civil War between 1861 and 1865. The HU News story is here The 2005 winner of the Johnston Award was Mr. Dwight Simon, a senior from Roanoke IN, for his paper "Partial Observers: Perspectives on the American Civil War from The Edinburgh Review and The Quarterly Review." The paper is an analysis of how British educated circles viewed the U.S. Civil War between 1861 and 1865. The HU News story is here The 2004 winner of the Johnston Award was Mr. Dwight Simon, a junior from Roanoke IN, for his paper, "The Lessons of Lochner: How Lochner v. New York Changed Constitutional Interpretation." ; The HC News story is here The 2003 winner of the Johnston Award was Ms. Joni Michaud, a junior from Clarksville MI, for her paper "The Missionary Life of Lloyd Eby in Sierra Leone, 1944-1947." Her paper was subsequently published in the July 2003 issue of The Journal of United Brethren History and Life. The HC News story is here The Ron Frank Memorial Endowment in HistoryThe Frank Fund was established in 1973 to honor the memory of Ron Frank, a Huntington College history major who passed away during the spring semester of his senior year. Donors to the fund sincerely desire to provide financial assistance to history majors at Huntington University while also memorializing Ron Frank. The Endowment funds three different types of awards:
