BUSINESS & ECONOMICS LIBRARY PATHFINDER
RichLyn Library's online catalog, available from the library home page, is key to accessing information in the library. Books, periodical titles, audiovisuals, special collections, and media software are all catalogued in OPAC.
Search by 1) author, searching personal and institutional names; 2) title, if you know the name of the book, periodical, or item; 3) subject heading, searching the assigned Library of Congress subject heading; and 4) keyword, searching combined words of your choosing. Notice that in Advanced Search you may use the drop-down boxes under Format to select different types of searches (e.g. by Videos & DVDs). Note the call numbers to locate items on shelves.
It is important to begin much of your searching using Reference books. While general encyclopedias are not to be cited in research papers, they do give generally reliable overviews of unfamiliar topics, and the end-of-articles-bibliographies are useful in building Works Cited pages. On the other hand, subject encyclopedias, handbooks, dictionaries and other reference tools are frequently used in writing research papers. Here are a number of print reference books in RichLyn Library that might be helpful in developing your topics.*

III. Interlibrary Loans
If you cannot find a book or journal article in RichLyn Library, go to RichLyn Library's home page. Next, link to Library Services on the left side of the screen. Scroll down to Interlibrary Loan and choose either book form* or article form. Presently all the EbscoHost databases offer ILL forms you may complete from their sites. Simply click on the ILL form icon and submit it. Or you may use the library's article ILL form by completing and submitting it; wait to be contacted, and pick up your ILL at the circulation desk.
*Notice that the book ILL form
should not be completed until you have set up My Account and a New User Registration in First Search. Follow the
instructions for New User as given on the ILL (book) page. First, you will need
to click on Book Request Form, then log-on to First Search,
and then My Account. Lastly, click on New User Registration.
You must have at least eight characters in both your user name and password.
Please, you must remember your user name and password. So, pick something you
will not forget. If you are an EXCEL or graduate student, make sure that you
indicate this on the form. Simply complete and submit your personal data and
the information about the book on the online form using First Search
(WorldCat). When an ILL item comes to the library, you will
be notified by RichLyn Library. Then go to the library to get the item; if the
item is a book, return it to the library according to the due date. If the
item is an article, you may keep it.
The ILL process takes from overnight to two weeks. If you wish to see how many
books you have checked out through
If you wish to borrow an article, just fill out the form from the ILL page,
"Click here for the ILL Article
Request Form." You may
also click on the ILL icon or link in EbscoHost's databases. Then complete and submit
their forms. The articles will be sent to your e-mail accounts unless you
indicate otherwise.
If you want a verification of what you ordered on the ILL forms, print a copy
of the authentication page. It will appear once you have sent for your item.
IV. Internet Databases: Now, look for journal articles.
Most of your research resources will likely consist of journal articles. RichLyn Library subscribes to a number of database services for the research needs of our patrons. Several of the databases are indexes to periodical articles but many also index newspapers, reports, pamphlets, books, and various other media. The services include vendors such as Ebscohost that provides access to dozens of subject and skill level databases. If you are considering legal issues related to business, you may want to use the legal database, Westlaw's Campus Research. You may access the databases from off campus by giving your user name and password. In addition, JSTOR offers full-text retrospective journal articles covering many curricular areas.
BNET - BNet's Find Articles contains free or proprietary full text articles from thousands of resources. Articles date back to 1984. Articles are take from leading academic, industry and general interest publications.

IngentaConnect, and HighBeam.com are very large periodical databases covering many subjects. They retrieve free, full-text, abstracted, and previewed articles. If you want a particular article that is not full text, check our other databases. If you do not find an article you need in the library's collections, simply fill out the correct online interlibrary loan form located through the library's home page and clicking on Library Services. After opening Library Services, scroll down to the appropriate ILL site.
Once the catalogs and databases have been searched, then open the Credo from the library's Electronic Resources. This is an electronic database of full-text reference books. It is important to look at the articles and possibly choose essays/articles that are lengthy; the word number count is given with each article. It is also important to choose subject specific titles (e.g. Grey Wolves: found in: Encyclopedia of Violence, Peace and Conflict, rather than: something like Hutchinson Encyclopedia of Facts [fictitious name].
If you are looking for directory type information about product or service oriented companies, go to Electronic Resources on the library's home page. Choose Reference USA Business Directory and click on the word, Business. There are over 13 million businesses listed in this directory, which lists such things as addresses, telephone numbers, CEOs and managers, number of employees, estimated sales, and news headlines.
