BUSINESS & ECONOMICS LIBRARY PATHFINDER

RichLyn Library's online catalog, available from the library home page, is key to accessing information in the library. Books, periodical titles, audiovisuals, special collections, and media software are all catalogued in OPAC.

Search by 1) author, searching personal and institutional names; 2) title, if you know the name of the book, periodical, or item; 3) subject heading, searching the assigned Library of Congress subject heading; and 4) keyword, searching combined words of your choosing. Notice that in Advanced Search you may use the drop-down boxes under Format to select different types of searches (e.g. by Videos & DVDs). Note the call numbers to locate items on shelves.

It is important to begin much of your searching using Reference books. While general encyclopedias are not to be cited in research papers, they do give generally reliable overviews of unfamiliar topics, and the end-of-articles-bibliographies are useful in building Works Cited pages. On the other hand, subject encyclopedias, handbooks, dictionaries and other reference tools are frequently used in writing research papers. Here are a number of print reference books in RichLyn Library that might be helpful in developing your topics.*

CQ Researcheris often the 1st source that librarians recommend when researchers are seeking original, comprehensive reporting and analysis on issues in the news.”
91.
Credo Reference one of the largest online reference book collections...
92.
Reference USA Business Directory is an online comprehensive residential and business directory detailing much internal information about businesses.

*    It is important to recognize that reference books come both in print and electronic editions. Two of the best electronic editions may be found through using the library's homepage link, ELECTRONIC RESOURCES. Scroll down to REFERENCE RESOURCES. Click on any of the following depending upon your research needs: Country Watch, CQ Researcher, Credo Reference, or Gale Virtual Reference Library. These are all full-text online reference resources.

II.    PALNI & WorldCat: Next, consider using PALNI or WorldCat for additional books and other research material.

PALNI - Private Academic Library Network of Indiana:
The PALNI catalog contains bibliographic records from twenty-five private, Indiana, academic and seminary libraries. Most of the material found in the PALNI catalog is available for free interlibrary loan. Additionally, most Indiana public and academic libraries loan their materials without charge. For more information about PALNI and its member institutions, click here

The First Search: WorldCat union catalog contains bibliographic records from all types of libraries worldwide. Here you will find public, university, and special libraries from which you may borrow books and articles through interlibrary loan. Also, remember you may borrow free from most public Indiana-based university libraries. Non-Indiana libraries will likely charge. Also, even within Indiana, there may be some exceptions where you may not be allowed to borrow such as with archival materials, but generally, most of the materials may be borrowed.

III.    Interlibrary Loans

If you cannot find a book or journal article in RichLyn Library, go to RichLyn Library's home page.  Next, link to Library Services on the left side of the screen. Scroll down to Interlibrary Loan and choose either book form* or article form. Presently all the EbscoHost databases offer ILL forms you may complete from their sites. Simply click on the ILL form icon and submit it. Or you may use the library's article ILL form by completing and submitting it; wait to be contacted, and pick up your ILL at the circulation desk.

*Notice that the book ILL form should not be completed until you have set up My Account and a New User Registration in First Search. Follow the instructions for New User as given on the ILL (book) page. First, you will need to click on Book Request Form, then log-on to First Search, and then My Account. Lastly, click on New User Registration. You must have at least eight characters in both your user name and password. Please, you must remember your user name and password. So, pick something you will not forget. If you are an EXCEL or graduate student, make sure that you indicate this on the form. Simply complete and submit your personal data and the information about the book on the online form using First Search (WorldCat). When an ILL item comes to the library, you will be notified by RichLyn Library. Then go to the library to get the item; if the item is a book, return it to the library according to the due date. If the item is an article, you may keep it.

The ILL process takes from overnight to two weeks. If you wish to see how many books you have checked out through ILL, go into your First Search/WorldCat book borrowing Account and click on the Resource Sharing tab. A listing of your book ILLs and their due dates will appear.

If you wish to borrow an article, just fill out the form from the ILL page, "Click here for the ILL Article Request Form." You may also click on the ILL icon or link in EbscoHost's databases. Then complete and submit their forms. The articles will be sent to your e-mail accounts unless you indicate otherwise.

If you want a verification of what you ordered on the ILL forms, print a copy of the authentication page. It will appear once you have sent for your item.

IV.    Internet Databases: Now, look for journal articles.

Most of your research resources will likely consist of journal articles. RichLyn Library subscribes to a number of database services for the research needs of our patrons. Several of the databases are indexes to periodical articles but many also index newspapers, reports, pamphlets, books, and various other media. The services include vendors such as Ebscohost that provides access to dozens of subject and skill level databases. If you are considering legal issues related to business, you may want to use the legal database, Westlaw's Campus Research. You may access the databases from off campus by giving your user name and password. In addition, JSTOR offers full-text retrospective journal articles covering many curricular areas.

BNET - BNet's Find Articles contains free or proprietary full text articles from thousands of resources. Articles date back to 1984. Articles are take from leading academic, industry and general interest publications.

            EBSCOHOST (selected):
            A.    Business Source Premier
This is the industry's most used business research database, providing the full text for more than 8,800 serials. Business Source Premier provides full text back to 1965 and searchable cited references back as far as 1998. Coverage includes virtually all subject areas related to business. This database is updated on a daily basis via EBSCOhost. If the database has "timed out," simply follow the instructions and re-choose the database.

TOPICsearch contains full text for over 102,800 articles from more than 2,500 diverse sources, including more than 1,550 full text periodicals.            THOMSON/GALE: INFOTRAC:
                *    Gale's Virtual Reference Library: 10 Sets of Full Text Reference Titles Online

            WESTLAW CAMPUS RESEARCH:
Westlaw Campus Research: You may search 100s of full text newspapers or use this premier database for state and national legal matters, which contains thousands of journal and other document articles.

When looking for journal articles, also consider the free, Internet/web-based, general databases when researching. BNET's database of free, full-text periodical articles. IngentaConnect, and  HighBeam.com are very large periodical databases covering many subjects. They retrieve free, full-text, abstracted, and previewed articles. If you want a particular article that is not full text, check our other databases. If you do not find an article you need in the library's collections, simply fill out the correct online interlibrary loan form located through the library's home page and clicking on Library Services.  After opening Library Services, scroll down to the appropriate ILL site.

Once the catalogs and databases have been searched, then open the Credo from the library's Electronic Resources. This is an electronic database of full-text reference books. It is important to look at the articles and possibly choose essays/articles that are lengthy; the word number count is given with each article. It is also important to choose subject specific titles (e.g. Grey Wolves: found in: Encyclopedia of Violence, Peace and Conflict, rather than: something like Hutchinson Encyclopedia of Facts [fictitious name].

If you are looking for directory type information about product or service oriented companies, go to Electronic Resources on the library's home page. Choose Reference USA Business Directory and click on the word, Business. There are over 13 million businesses listed in this directory, which lists such things as addresses, telephone numbers, CEOs and managers, number of employees, estimated sales, and news headlines.

V.    Internet World Wide Web

Lastly, consider using applicable web sites. Always be a bit skeptical of the authenticity of web sites. Check the authority of the creator of the site. Who developed the site? Does the site have a current date of creation? Investigate the organization and/or author who sponsors the site. Below you will find sites that are approved as authoritative:

   A.    Search Engines:

  • Search Tips: When searching most databases or using search engines, here are some helpful tips:       1) When you want to search a phrase, use quotation marks: e.g. "civil war";  if quotation marks are not used, try parentheses: e.g. (civil war). 2) Use an asterisk to truncate when searching to access all terms beginning with the same letters: e.g. train* will access: train, trains, trained, training, trainer, trainers, trainable. If you do not truncate, you will need to search each term separately. 3) Use the Boolean term AND to narrow a search: e.g. dogs AND cats will search for items that have both terms; use the Boolean term OR to broaden a search: e.g. dogs OR cats will search for each item irrespective of whether both terms are present. Use the Boolean term NOT to eliminate a term from the search: e.g. dogs AND cats NOT pets will eliminate the term pets from the search. * Notice, that in using Boolean search terms, the terms should be in all capitals.

  • DogPile    "All the best search engines piled into one." Google, Yahoo, MSN, Ask.
