HU Students: Accessing Library Databases, and Interlibrary Loans, etc. from Remote Locations    August 26, 2008

    1.         Log on to the off-campus library link at http://campus.huntington.edu/library.

Use your campus username, the one used to log on to the campus network. For students, it is a lower case s followed by your user name.     Generally, you will need to type hc\ before your user name. Finally, enter your personal password.

    2.         Borrowing from RichLyn Library: If you are not a registered user at RichLyn Library, Huntington University, fill out and turn in one of the Registration forms at the circulation desk. This will place you in our computer system and allow you to use all the library’s services and borrow books using your User Name and Password.

Search for books using the drop-down arrow in the search box, and then select the type search you want. Title, author, and subject are the most common searches. Return materials promptly by the due date. Checkouts for books and most other items are for two weeks.

    3.         Borrowing from PALNI Libraries: If you have a valid HU ID card, you may physically borrow books from any of the PALNI libraries listed under the link, Other Library Catalogs, found on the library’s home page.

When visiting any of the PALNI libraries, identify yourself with a HU ID card and photo-ID; this should allow you to borrow books. Both Grace College and Concordia Seminary want our personnel to alert them before sending borrowers to their libraries. Return materials promptly by the due date. Checkouts may be for any amount of time as determined by the lending library.

    4.         Borrowing from ALI Libraries: If you want to borrow from any of the PALNI libraries and/or other academic libraries in the state, you will need to register. Complete, tear off, and return the form from the Academic Libraries of Indiana (ALI) foldout. Either Mrs. Michelson or the director must sign both your registration form and the ALI borrower’s card. Keep the information portion of the form. Completing this process will allow you to borrow books from the private (PALNI) and state universities and colleges libraries listed. In addition, fill out the front of the ALI Borrowers Card for yourself, which allows you to borrow materials from the other libraries. Make sure the back side of the card is completed and signed by a library authority. You will need your HU/ID card, your ALI card, and your driver’s license to check out the materials. Return borrowed materials promptly by the due date. Checkouts may be for any amount of time as determined by the lending library.

               APPENDIX B

                InspireIndiana: http://www.inspire.net/

               * What exactly is INSPIRE?

INSPIRE is Indiana's Virtual Library on the Internet. INSPIRE is a collection of commercial databases and other information resources that can be accessed by Indiana residents using any computer equipped with an Indiana Internet connection and a Web browser such as Netscape or Internet Explorer.

Question: I use America Online and I cannot access the INSPIRE site from my home   computer, why not?

Answer: If you use any Internet Service Provider (ISP) that serves areas outside Indiana (such as AOL, CompuServe and Prodigy), you will need to apply for an INSPIRE Password at http://www.in.gov/library/inspire/login.html .

Question: My local ISP is in Indiana and I still cannot get access to INSPIRE   from home.  Why not?

Answer: We may need to update our authorization files with details of your ISP. Please email the name, address and telephone number of your ISP to
inspire@library.in.gov or apply for an INSPIRE Password @ http://www.in.gov/library/inspire/login.html.

                APPENDIX C

            Interlibrary Loan:

(Borrowing Books from Other Indiana Libraries): Find the book(s) from an Indiana academic library that our catalog does not list. Use the FirstSearch database or WorldCat.org http://worldcat.org/ Google Book Search http://books.google.com/, or any other complete bibliographic citation to find the book(s) you want. Then copy all needed bibliographic information about the book (Probably from a citation created on the WorldCat screen). Paste the complete bibliographic information in an email to pjones@huntington.edu. Give your name, your instructor’s name, the name of the class, your home address, your home phone number, and your email address.

You may be able to go to our remote location home page and click Interlibrary Loan, and then select the book order form. Fill it out completely and submit it. If this works remotely, it is the preferred method.

Remember, if a book is from an Indiana academic library, the delivery will be free with no costs if you return it by the due date. Borrowing from outside the state, however, you may incur charges.

Check the due date when you get the book and return it. You might want to try URL, http://www.worldcat.org, if First Search: Indiana Catalog is not available.

(Borrowing Journal/Newspaper Articles from Other Indiana Libraries): To borrow from any of the EbscoHost databases, use their Request ILL link (Interlibrary Loan), and complete the form by following the instructions. Make sure you indicate on the form that you are a Graduate student.

For all other periodical article ILLs, simply choose the INTERLIBRARY LOAN link on the library’s home page.

At the next screen, please use Click here for the ILL Article Request Form.

Complete forms by doing a copy/paste from the citation(s) you chose, and click Submit Request.

It is important to mention in the “Special Instructions” box any other contact or personal information that we might need to know before sending you the article(s).

Make sure that we do not already have a full-text copy of the article in another database.

The requested articles will be sent to you via email or by mail if requested.
