Doing Sociological & Social Work Research:
Search by 1) author, searching personal and institutional names; 2) title, if you know the name of the book, periodical, or item; 3) subject heading, searching the assigned Library of Congress subject heading; and 4) keyword, searching combined words of your choosing. Note call numbers to locate items on shelves.
PALNI - Private Academic Library Network of Indiana:
The
PALNI catalog contains bibliographic records from twenty-five private,
Indiana, academic and seminary libraries. Most of the material found in the
PALNI catalog is available for free interlibrary loan. Additionally, most
public, Indiana, academic libraries loan their materials without charge. For
more information about PALNI
and its member institutions, click
here.
The First Search: WorldCat union catalog contains bibliographic records from all types of libraries worldwide. Here you will find public, Indiana, university libraries from which you may borrow books and articles through interlibrary loan. There may be some exceptions such as archival materials, but generally, most of the materials may be borrowed.
III. INTERLIBRARY LOANS:
If you want to borrow a journal article from another college or university, go to RichLyn Library's home page. Next, click the link, Interlibrary Loan and choose the article form. Complete the article form for the journal article, submit it, wait to be contacted, and pick up your article at the circulation desk.
If you are using Ebsco's databases, there is an ILL link after each article that you find that is not full text. You may simply click on the link and submit the form to receive the article via your email account. Your article will arrive by email sometimes within 48-hours. Always check your email accounts, however, since many articles are presumed lost or delayed when in fact they are residing in your neglected email.
If you want to borrow a book from another library, you must set up an account. Establishing an account is a simple process if you follow the instructions as found at the INTERLIBRARY LOAN BOOK REQUEST FORM web page. If you borrowed a book, return it to the library according to the due date or there could be a fine. If the item is a journal article, there is no need to return it. The process takes from 48-hours to two weeks. Therefore, allow yourself time to obtain the item[s] and to take notes.
In addition, if you are off-campus and want to borrow a book, simply click on the Interlibrary Loan link on the library's home page, then the "Click here for the ILL book Request Form," then the ILL Book Request form for OFF-CAMPUS USERS." Lastly, complete the Interlibrary Loan Book Request Form, and submit request. you will need to pick up the book at the circulation desk, check the due-date, and return it as per the due-date.
IV. INTERNET DATABASES: Now, look for journal articles.

BNET: Look Smart's Find Articles is a large database of free, full-text periodical articles. IngentaConnect, HighBeam.com, Open J-Gate, DOAJ Directory of Open Access Journals, and High Wire Press are very large periodical databases covering many subjects. They retrieve free, full-text, abstracted, and previewed articles. If you want a particular article that is not full text, check our other databases. If you do not find an article you need in the library's collections, simply fill out the correct online interlibrary loan form located through the library's home page and clicking on Library Services. After opening Library Services, scroll down to the appropriate ILL site.
Once the catalogs and databases have been searched, open the Virtual Reference Shelf from the link on the library's home page, Electronic Resources. Remember, a general encyclopedia is used to obtain background information for a topic about which not much is known. Also, general encyclopedias are used to help develop personal bibliographies. Simply check the bibliographies (Works Cited or References) for each article read. Then include in your bibliography those items from the article's bibliography that apply to you. With this said, however, it is important to note that most professors do not want their students citing from general encyclopedias.

A. Search Engines:
B. Online Periodicals from the Web (Free):
C. Online Books, Monographs, Essays, etc. from the Web (Free): (In addition to free Internet books below, always consult our paid subscription to CredoReference, the "world's largest online reference database.")

IX. REFERENCE BOOKS IN RICHLYN LIBRARY (In addition to the print books below, always consult CredoReference, the "world's largest online reference database.") It is important to begin much of your searching using Reference books. While general encyclopedias are not to be cited in research papers, they do give generally reliable overviews of unfamiliar topics, and the end-of-articles-bibliographies are useful in building Works Cited pages. On the other hand, subject encyclopedias, handbooks and other reference tools are frequently used in writing research papers. Here are a number of sociological/social work reference books in RichLyn Library that might be helpful in developing your topics.
