Careers
There are many sources of
information about potential careers for students majoring in mathematics.
Here are a few such sources.
·The HU Career Development Office can assist you with
information, help on resume writing, interviewing techniques, and much more.
·HU alumni are very helpful here. You should contact your
advisor, or others in the department, or the Alumni office for more
information.
·There are several booklets (and a video) published by the
Mathematical Association of America or by the American Mathematics Society
dealing with careers. Most of the books consist of brief (1 – 2 page)
biographies of persons who were undergraduate mathematics majors, focusing
on what sort of careers they have. The variety of careers may surprise
you! These resources are on reserve in the library under Dr. Jones’ name.
·The student journal Math Horizons, published by the
Mathematical Association of America generally has several articles per year
dealing with career information. The Library has past issues of this
journal.
·The Mathematical Association of America’s web page (http://www.maa.org/careers/)
has links to undergraduate opportunities, which include career ideas.
·The American Mathematical Society’s webpage has several
resources for career ideas
·If you are interested in actuarial science, there are several
additional resources for you to use.
oBegin by visiting the web site of the Society of Actuaries (www.soa.org
) and the website
http://beanactuary.com/ . These will give you a lot of career
information, as well as information about the tests required to become a
full actuary.
oYou should make it a priority to get a (summer) internship
with an insurance company as an actuarial student.
·US News and World Report also has career information here
