There are many
opportunities to tutor mathematics, including working for the Learning
Center to tutor HU students as well as working for yourself tutoring
students from the community in elementary, middle school, or high school
mathematics. Tutoring provides a valuable service opportunity, and gives
you practice in explaining mathematical ideas to other people. Our
graduates have mentioned that this is one way to get more practice in
communicating mathematics.
Credit by Examination
If you have completed a
year of calculus in high school, there are a couple of ways in which you may
earn credit by examination. First, there is the CLEP exam in Calculus. If
you pass it, you have credit for MA 171 (our first semester of
calculus).
Second, if you scored a 3,
4, 5 on the AP calculus test (AB version), then you have credit for MA 171,
and half of MA 172. We have a departmental review packet and test for the
second half of MA 172. This deals with advanced techniques of integration,
sequences and infinite series. Successful completion of this exam results
in credit for the last 2 hours in MA 172.
Finally, if you scored a
3, 4, 5 on the AP calculus test (BC version), then you have credit for MA
171, and all of MA 172.
