High School Mathematics Competition

The Huntington University Mathematics competition is provided as a means of fostering mathematical interest and expertise among students.  The next fall high school competition will be held Fall, 2008 (TBA).

Competition Overview

The competition consists of three parts:  the written exam, individual ciphering, and a team problem solving event.

  • The Written Exam:  The written exam consists of 20 multiple choice questions from mathematics topics ranging from beginning algebra through calculus.  Competitors are given 40 minutes to  complete the exam.  The questions allow the use of a graphing calculator.  The score for each team member on the written test will be added to the team score and to the individual score.

  • The Individual Competition:  During the individual competition each competitor is given a problem to complete without the aid of a calculator within a two minute time interval.  Each individual completes the problem as quickly as possible.  Points are granted to the individual and to the team based on how quickly an accurate response is given.  Competitors only have one chance to turn in a solution.

  • The Team Problem Solving:  During the team problem solving portion of the competition, a multi-faceted problem will be given to the entire school team to complete.  The team is responsible to work together to distribute the tasks to complete the problem.  Often these problems require a graphing calculator task as well as a written task.  Points are granted to the team based on how quickly the response is given.  Teams can only submit one solution.

Huntington University Mathematics

The growth of technology in our society presents greater needs for individuals with analytical skills and experience in the development and use of technologies. Concentrations in the mathematical sciences prepare students for a wide variety of careers requiring problem solving, logical reasoning, and applications of current technologies. The mathematics program at Huntington University combines the individual attention normally associated with small liberal arts colleges with the educational opportunities and research-active faculty normally found only at major universities. The normal route into mathematics at Huntington University begins with a year of single-variable calculus followed by introductory linear algebra and multivariable calculus or perhaps probability and statistics and a course in differential equations. These courses prepare students for further work in mathematics, computer science, the physical sciences, and engineering and form the usual introduction to the Mathematics major. Students may accelerate their progress through Huntington's mathematics program through advanced placement programs at the high school level.
