Invitational
Middle School Mathematics Competition
The Huntington University Mathematics competition is provided as a means of
fostering mathematical interest and expertise among students. The HU Middle School mathematics competition is scheduled for
Wednesday,
April 22, 2009. The competition is similar to the high school
competition, using middle school content as described below. Participants in the competition must be in the 8th grade or below.
Competition Overview
The competition consists of three parts: the
written exam, individual ciphering, and a team problem solving event. Because
of the large number of participants the competition has had recently, please
be aware that we may alter the time limits of the tests on the day of the
competition in order to stay on schedule.

The Team Problem Solving
During the team problem solving portion of the competition, a set of
harder problems are given to the entire school team to complete. These
problems are designed to encourage participation from the entire team. The team is
responsible to work together to distribute the
tasks to complete the problem. Teams can only submit one
solution.
The growth of technology in our society
presents greater needs for individuals with analytical skills and experience
in the development and use of technologies. Concentrations in the
mathematical sciences prepare students for a wide variety of careers
requiring problem solving, logical reasoning, and applications of current
technologies. The mathematics program at Huntington University combines the
individual attention normally associated with small liberal arts colleges
with the educational opportunities and research-active faculty normally found
only at major universities. The normal route into mathematics at Huntington
University begins with a year of single-variable calculus followed by
introductory linear algebra and multivariable calculus or perhaps probability
and statistics and a course in differential equations. These courses prepare
students for further work in mathematics, computer science, the physical
sciences, and engineering and form the usual introduction to the Mathematics
major. Students may accelerate their progress through Huntington's
mathematics program through advanced placement programs at the high school
level.
