Sample Individual Test

Below is a sample of 10 questions that have been used for the individual competition.

1.    What is the product of 3.12 and 83?

2.    The weight of an object on the Moon is 1/6 the weight of that object on the Earth.  Suppose a man weighs 180 pounds on Earth.  How many kilograms would he weigh on the Moon, to the nearest kilogram?  (1 kg = 2.2 lb.)

3.    If the price of a can of beans is raised from 50 cents to 60 cents, what is the percent increase in price?

4.    What is the greatest number of squares with 9-inch sides that can be cut from a rectangular piece of cloth 1 ½ feet wide by 3 feet long?

5.    Pencils sell individually for $0.07 each or in packs of 12 for $0.79 per pack.  A school buys 8 gross pencils.  (A gross is a dozen dozen, or 144).  How much does the school save by purchasing packs instead of purchasing pencils individually?

6.    How many whole numbers are there between the square root of 15 and the square root of 63?

7.    A fair coin is to be tossed three times.  What is the probability that 2 heads and 1 tail in any order will come up?

8.    A rectangular pool 24 feet long, 8 feet wide, and 4 feet deep is filled with water.  Water is leaking from the pool at the rate of 0.4 cubic foot per minute.  At this rate, how many HOURS will it take for the water level to drop 1 foot?

9.    A contractor is building 5 different model homes on 5 adjacent lots on one side of a street.  If 1 house is to be built on each lot, how many different arrangements of the 5 houses are possible?

10.  The population of the United States is approximately 250 million, and the national debt is approximately 4 trillion dollars.  If this debt were divided equally among the population, what would be the debt, in dollars, per person?
