Audition Information & Requirements

When completing the application for admission to Huntington University, a prospective music major must also contact the music department, fill out a music grant application, and schedule an audition. All students wishing to declare a music major or minor must be auditioned and accepted by the Music Department in audition to the college admission.

We strongly recommend that musicians plan to visit and audition in person on one of our regularly scheduled music visitation weekends. These include special Mondays during February. The audition days begin at 9:00 AM with a representative from Admissions, followed by rehearsals of audition repertoire from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. Auditions are then held in the Recital Hall at 11:00 and parents are encouraged to attend. After the auditions, students and parents are invited to lunch with the music faculty. The afternoon is left open for anyone wishing to tour the campus or visit classes. Auditionees are invited to spend the night in the dorms with current music students while parents can find lodging at the nearby hotels.

GUIDELINES FOR MUSIC AUDITIONS

All prospective music majors and minors must audition to be accepted into any music degree program.

Audition Requirements

  • Two selections from the “classical” or “art song” repertory – contrasting periods and styles. Show Tunes, Pop Music, or Contemporary Christian songs are not acceptable for a college audition.

    • Vocalists should have one art song or aria in English and one in a foreign language if possible. Please do not choose Latin choral pieces.

    • Brass, winds, and orchestral strings, should prepare at least one piece, with piano accompaniment. The other selection can be a contrasting etude or orchestral excerpt.

    • Percussionists should prepare 1 melodic percussion piece (mallets) and be prepared to demonstrate basic rudiments on snare.

    • Pianists should be prepared to play one Romantic or Twentieth Century piece or movement from a larger work, from such composers as Chopin, Brahms, Debussy, Bartók, or any other concert music composer, and one Classical or Baroque piece, or movement from a larger work such as a Mozart sonata or Bach suite.

    • Guitarists should prepare one classical (finger-style) piece, one accompaniment to a hymn, scales played across all six (6) strings, and one piece from tablature notation.

    • Prospective composition majors should bring two examples of original work and be prepared to perform one solo piece on an major instrument.

  • Ten minutes is the maximum time allowed for each audition. Please consult your high school director or private teacher for help in choosing appropriate repertoire.

  • An accompanist will be provided. No accompanist tapes please. Bring clear and readable copies of your music in the original score or in a binder, front to back, in book form. (Loose photocopied sheets can fall off the piano while you are playing or singing.)  You will be given time to work with the accompanist before your audition.

  • Audition repertoire for vocalists, pianists, and guitarists must be memorized. Wind and string players are encouraged to memorize selections.

Scheduling Auditions

  • Auditions are normally scheduled on Music Department Audition Days. Auditions are held the first two weeks in February. Special auditions can be arranged but only in emergency situations when none of the regular audition days will work. All grants are awarded by February 16th; therefore later auditions cannot be considered for any grant money.

  • If it is impossible for you to come to campus for an audition, you may send an audition videotape before the last audition day.

  • you must contact the music office at (260) 359-4262 prior to auditioning.

Provisional Status

If, through the audition process, it comes to our attention that you do not have any advanced skills to bring to your music pursuits, you may be placed on provisional status for the first year. This grants you full privileges as a music major yet indicates that the level of your accomplishments must be at or above a certain standard for you to continue.  We also give all entering freshmen a Music Theory Self-Programmed Workbook to complete during the summer, ensuring that every student is properly prepared for college-level music study. We do this to enhance your opportunity for success by providing you with the best incentives for succeeding in your chosen field.

Scholarship and Performance Grant Applications are available from the Music Department and must be completed before the audition.
