Music for the Contemporary Church

The Bachelor of Arts in Music for the Contemporary Church at Huntington University is a broad liberal arts degree that enables the student to concentrate on basic music skills and have time for Biblical and theological studies. Specific Church Music curriculum includes an examination of the history of music in the church with an exposure to techniques for the practicing church musician.

Church Music students are encouraged to develop a clear understanding of the role of music in the life of the local congregation. In addition to classes in Hymnology, Liturgy, Sacred Choral Literature, Church Music Administration, and Theology of Music in Worship, students learn while doing through singing in choirs, ringing handbells, playing in instrumental ensembles as well as planning, playing, singing, or conducting in actual chapel and church services. The Church Music curriculum includes a strong component in choral conducting as well as applied and theoretical studies and arranging and composing for choirs.

A worship studies minor is offered to church music majors who wish further study in worship and ministry.
