Phil L. Burkett
Adjunct Faculty (Church Music)
Dr. Philip L. Burkett graduated
from Huntington College with his B.A. as a music (vocal performance) major.
He was the Fine Arts Assistant his junior and senior years. In his senior
year, he received the Most Outstanding Scholar, Most Outstanding Dramatist
and Most Outstanding Musician awards at Huntington College.
Dr. Burkett earned his Master of Church Music degree from The Southern
Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, KY double majoring in Church Music
and Vocal Performance. While enrolled there he served as the Sacred Opera
Department assistant and appeared in numerous opera and sacred opera scenes
and full productions. While a graduate student, he was the tenor
soloist/section leader at the Catholic Cathedral in Louisville and choir
director for the Highland United Methodist Church. He was a soloist with the
Louisville Bach Society and the Seminary Oratorio Society. During the
1980-š81 season, he appeared with the Kentucky Opera Associationšs
production of Carmen as Dancairo and Tosca as Spoletta.
Dr. Burkett was selected to do a summer opera internship with the Des Moines
Metro Opera in 1980. In Fort Wayne, he appeared as Bob in Menottišs Old Maid
and the Thief and the title role in Mozartšs Impressario in the Northern
Indiana Opera Associationšs joint productions with the Fort Wayne
Philharmonic.
During the 1981-82 school year he was an adjunct voice instructor at
Huntington College as well as teacher of French and German diction and coach
of the Huntington College deputation team. Since then, he has served as a
pastor, missionary, song evangelist, soloist and choir director in numerous
churches across the United States, Canada, England, Hong Kong, and Macau.
Dr. Burkett earned his Master of Christian Ministries degree from Huntington
College in 1986 and was ordained in the United Brethren Denomination in that
same year. Currently, he serves as the Associate Pastor of Worship and Music
at College Park United Brethren Church in Huntington, IN.
Dr. Burkett completed his Doctor of Worship Studies degree in 2009 from the
Robert E. Webber Institute of Worship Studies located in Orange Grove, Fl.
He is married to Darlene, also an H.U. adjunct music faculty, and has two
children Jeremy (2006 graduate of Huntington University) and Carissa (2008
graduate of Azusa Pacific University).
