Phil Schurger
Adjunct Faculty (Guitar Instructor)

PHIL SCHURGER began playing music professionally at the age of 17. At the age of 21 he began playing and studying Jazz and 20th century music in depth. His early college career was spent as an English major with a concentration in creative writing. In 2002, he transferred to Northern Illinois University where he did a contract major titled “A Non-Western Approach to Creativity in Music” which emphasized studies in human psychology and culture as the basis for musical composition and expression. His Master’s Degree was an individualized study concentrated in three areas: Jazz guitar, Composition, and Electronic Music.

He has studied with Fareed Haque (guitar), Robert Fleischer and David Maki (composition), and James Phelps (electronic music). In 2003, he attended the School for Improvisational Music (SIM) in New York, where he had opportunities to take lessons and play with Ravi Coltrane, David Gilmore, Brad Shepik, Mark Helias, and Ralph Alessi. Phil has played gigs throughout the United States and Europe. He is currently doing jazz gigs throughout the area, and is a member of the Matthew Sturm Band. He is instructor of Class Guitar at Huntington University and teaches privately.
