Music Performance
As a member of the National
Association of Schools of Music, Huntington University offers
conservatory-level training in our Bachelor of Music in Performance degree
programs in piano, voice, and orchestral instruments. This degree is a
professional degree designed to prepare students for performance careers and
advanced degree study. Members of our applied
music faculty have extensive performance experience; they have appeared
as soloists with major orchestras, collaborated with chamber music groups,
and released CD recordings marketed internationally. Our faculty is
committed to helping you develop as a musician and a scholar, and ultimately
expand the depth and breadth of your creative energy and expression for the
glory of God.
Intensive applied study of representative repertoire, technique, musicality,
and sight reading provide the centerpiece for our performance program. In
addition to coaching and performance in applied lessons and studio labs, our
performance majors have many additional performance opportunities to hone
their craft. These experiences include numerous recitals including our
showcase Longaker Recital, on-campus and regional concerto competitions, and
frequent area opportunities for guest performances. To maintain awareness of
“real world” standards, we offer on-campus master classes and recitals with
internationally-known guest artists such as Richard Fracker (NY Metropolitan
Opera), James Giles (Fulbright Scholar and 1st prize—Johanna Hodges Int’l
Piano Competition, Panayis Lyras (Silver-Medalist—Van Cliburn Competition,
John Owings (Gold-Medalist—Casadesus Int’l Piano Competition), George
Fortune (Berlin Opera), and others.
To the applied study centerpiece is added comprehensive preparation in music
history, theory, aural skills, as well as pedagogy and literature for the
applied instrument or voice. Students often take courses in an adjunct area
such as church music or business to enhance their professional options.
The Vocal Performance major offers intensive vocal training, diction study
of Italian, French, German, and English, and study and performance of vocal
literature from all major music periods. The Piano Performance major
includes an accompanying component, and an introduction to jazz
improvisation and music technology. Piano performance majors also have the
option of pursuing an Emphasis in Piano Pedagogy. This emphasis includes
courses in education, additional pedagogy, and teaching internships.
Instrumental Performance majors enjoy the opportunity to perform with a wide
variety of ensembles including Wind Ensemble, Chamber Orchestra, Jazz
Ensemble, Brass Ensembles and chamber ensembles.
The performance major prepares students for careers as:
• Solo performers
• Private studio teachers
• College/University teachers
• Church musicians
• Orchestral musicians
• Accompanists
• Teachers at Christian or private academies
• Opportunities in the fields of music business, music/arts
management, or
music technology.
