Fall Work Day to send students throughout local community FOR RELEASE October 14,
2003 There are many sites chosen for the day of service, including the YMCA, Head Start, Love in the Name of Christ, Kids’ Kampus, individual homes and more. All participants in the day’s activities will be admitted for free to the showing of Pirates of the Caribbean in the Merillat Centre for the Arts. The movie event is hosted by the campus’ Student Activities Board (SAB). “Teaming with SAB brings good partnership within the campus community to reach out to the local community,” stated Susan Guilkey, the student director for JMC public relations. “Our goal for the Fall Work Day is to see students who have never helped recognize the impact their work has to the Huntington community.” Huntington College’s Joe Mertz Center for Volunteer Service is a student-directed organization that mobilizes the campus community for Christian service. The Joe Mertz Center aims to involve students in the local community, instill a lifelong tendency toward service, and promote the idea that one person can make a difference. The Joe Mertz Center has been listed as an exemplary program in the John Templeton Foundation Honor Roll of Character-Building Colleges. The 2003-2004 JMC theme, “Practice What You Preach,” comes from 1 John 3:18, “Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.” Huntington College is a comprehensive Christian college of the liberal arts offering graduate and undergraduate programs in more than 60 academic concentrations.
