Berry, Sanders honored as Athletes of the Week

FOR RELEASE February 14, 2004
Huntington, Ind.— The Huntington College athletic department announced its Athletes of the Week for the week of February 7-13, 2005. Basketball sophomore Amy Berry and men’s track and field freshman Joel Sanders earned the honors for their outstanding efforts during the week’s competitions.

Amy Berry

Amy Berry, a public relations major from Marion, Ind. (Oak Hill High School), led the Foresters in scoring in their two wins during the week.  In Huntington’s 48-25 win over Goshen College, Berry was the only player to reach double figures in the game.  She went 7-12 from the field and 2-3 from the line for 16 points and added a game-high eight rebounds and blocked three shots.  In the Foresters’ 56-46 victory over Spring Arbor University, she scored a game-high 18 points and chipped in three rebounds, three assists and two steals.  The Foresters (12-14, 7-8) will travel to Mishawaka, Ind. for their final regular season game at Bethel College on Wednesday, February 16, at 7:00 p.m.

Joel Sanders

Freshman Joel Sanders, an elementary education major from Fort Wayne, Ind. (Snider High School), is making his presence known early with the men’s track and field team.  In the Foresters’ previous two meets, Sanders has broken two school records and qualified for the NAIA National Indoor Track and Field Championships in two separate events.  At the DePauw University Invitational, he broke the school record in the 1000 meter run with his time of 2 minutes, 33.63 seconds, and met provisional standards for the NAIA National Championships. Sanders added a second school record in the 800 meter run at the Taylor University Invitational with his time of 1:57.73, a mark also good enough to qualify him for nationals in a second event.  The Forester track team returns to action on Friday, February 18, when they travel to Ada, Ohio, for the Ohio Northern University Invitational at 6 p.m.

The Huntington College Foresters compete in 14 intercollegiate sports for men and women. In the past eight years, Huntington has produced 50 NAIA All-American honors and 99 All-American Scholar Athlete honors.
