Upcoming theatre performance to
celebrate past production

FOR RELEASE March 31, 2005
HUNTINGTON, IN— The Huntington College Theater Company's April performance of Curious Savage will be the school's third performance of the play, and to celebrate this, special events are planned for current and former cast members.

On Saturday, April 9, the cast and crews from the 1954 and 1972 performances will attend a luncheon in the Habecker Dining Commons before the two o’clock performance.  Following that performance, there will be a reception for the current and past casts and family members.  A photograph display with images from all three performances is in the works as well.

"Since the department seems to be growing at a fairly good pace, we just want to remember to take the time to thank all those who helped build the program before it was an actual academic program," said professor Ella Burnett, a costume and scenic designer for the upcoming production.

Dr. Carl Zurcher, who taught at the College from 1950-1989, directed the previous performances of the play.

"This is one of those plays about which I have good memories," he said.  "To come back and see it is an endorsement of our taste.  If a young director thinks it's worth doing, that makes me feel good about our taste."

Next week’s production is directed by David Shamburger, assistant professor of theatre arts at Huntington College. Written by John Patrick, The Huntington College Theatre Company will present Curious Savage from April 7-9, 2005. Showtime is set for 7:30 p.m., in the Studio Theatre of the Merillat Centre for the Arts. A Saturday matinee will take place at 2 p.m. Tickets may be reserved by calling the Merillat Centre for the Arts Box Office at (260) 359-4261. Admission is $8 for the general public, $4 for seniors and students.

Curious Savage portrays Mrs. Savage, a widow who has been left $10 million by her husband. Her grown stepchildren desire to have the money, and knowing that the widow’s wealth is in negotiable securities of which they cannot get a hold of, the stepchildren commit her to a sanatorium hoping to bring the widow to her senses. This high comedy will leave the audience with a feeling that the neglected virtues of kindness and affection have not been entirely lost in a world that seems motivated at times only by greed and dishonesty.
