Doughty publishes second book, Flow

FOR RELEASE September 9, 2004

Dr. Del Doughty

HUNTINGTON, IN— Dr. Del Doughty, associate professor of English at Huntington College, recently published his second poetry collection, Flow.  He will travel throughout the area this fall to give readings from the book that is published by Red Moon Press (Winchester, Va.).

Doughty’s first collection, The Sound of Breathing, was awarded the Virgil Hutton International Prize in 2000 for best chapbook.  Dr. Doughty received grants from both the Indiana Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts that allowed him to complete the Flow project.

“This collection contains some—but not all—of the best work I’ve done the past three years,” Doughty said.  “I could have written a longer book.  In fact, I had planned on it.  But then last summer I decided to write a better book.  There are only about twenty poems, but each one resonates against the others that immediately precede or follow it.  Each poem, in other words, tinkers with the significance of the one that precedes it, as well as the one that follows it.”

Doughty has published poems in various journals including still, Heron’s Next, Modern Haiku, Country Feedback, Frogpond, bottle rockets, The Mars Hill Review, and haijinx.  His poem “Flow” was recognized as the "Best Poem of the Spring Issue 2003" by the Modern Haiku journal.

Doughty earned his Ph.D. in comparative literature from Penn State University in 1995. His professional interests include writing and information technology, hypertext poetics, haiku and film.  He has received grants from the NEH, NEA, Indiana Arts Commission, and Eli Lilly Endowment for both his research and his poetry.
